Emissions responded in kind.<\/p>\n<p>Pierre Friedlingstein and a slew of co-authors provide an &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ngeo\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/ngeo1022.html\">Update on CO2 emissions<\/a>&#8221; in the latest\u00a0<em>Nature Geoscience<\/em> (HT:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-11799073\">BBC<\/a>): \u00a0Global CO2 emissions declined by 1.3% in 2009. No surprise there, although the decline was lower than projected.\u00a0(A closer look at the breakdown doesn&#8217;t come as much of a surprise, either: U.S. emissions declined by almost 7% in line with miserable economic figures. Chinese emissions increased once again, by +8%, in line with its continuing strong economic growth.)<\/p>\n<p>The disconcerting part: global emissions are scheduled to shoot right back up in 2010 and then some at +3%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/markets\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/32\/files\/2010\/11\/Nature-Geoscience.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-101\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/markets\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/32\/files\/2010\/11\/Nature-Geoscience-300x231.png\" alt=\"(C) Nature Geoscience\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/markets\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/32\/files\/2010\/11\/Nature-Geoscience-300x231.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/markets\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/32\/files\/2010\/11\/Nature-Geoscience.png 436w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The atmosphere barely notices these kinks in the general trend line, which continues to march up unabated.
