Thanks to this support, MEM now has the tools and capabilities to model different medium and long-term scenarios in the operation of its electricity system, as well as to estimate the resulting GHG emissions. This allows MEM to have clear and transparent information to explore its options to join the ETA mechanism.

This collaboration has been fundamental to understand and efficiently face the challenges of the energy transition, not only from the Dominican Republic’s experience, but from a broad and representative perspective of the Global South. The transfer of technical and technological capabilities, in addition to facilitating the development of capacities and strategies adapted to local realities, also supports decision-making based on transparent, solid and reliable information, thanks to the design of representative scenarios. This point is fundamental in a context where developing countries must face the challenge of increasing their climate ambition while safeguarding the economic and social well-being of their populations. This provides a robust example of cooperation between Global South entities and can be a model for future cooperation.

So far, the teams have made significant progress: the modeling of scenarios for the planning and operation of the Dominican electricity system until 2050 has made it possible to identify the most viable routes to reduce emissions, as well as the levels of investment needed to meet the country’s current policy objectives and climate commitments. In addition, the impact of regulatory measures to accelerate the adoption of renewable energies has been evaluated, ensuring that the transition is not only technically, but also socially just.

In the coming weeks, the final results of the project will provide the Dominican government with relevant background information to evaluate its participation in the ETA mechanism and help them plan their energy transition. However, the collaboration does not end with the delivery of inputs for decision making: MCET-Chile will continue accompanying MEM, facilitating the training of its technical team in the implementation and use of the Switch modeling tool, as well as the transfer of capacities for the operation of the electricity planning model developed for the Dominican Republic. The purpose of this is to continue promoting energy policies adjusted to the most recent analyses and the changing context of the sector. The experience is a great example of the value of South-South partnerships in the creation of collaborative solutions to help developing countries lead their transition to a cleaner and more equitable energy future.
