{"id":8131,"date":"2018-08-31T15:00:28","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T20:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/?p=8131"},"modified":"2024-02-12T11:02:12","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T16:02:12","slug":"what-a-new-head-of-epas-tsca-office-will-face-and-need-to-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2018\/08\/31\/what-a-new-head-of-epas-tsca-office-will-face-and-need-to-do\/","title":{"rendered":"What a new head of EPA\u2019s TSCA office will face and need to do"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Richard Denison, Ph.D.,\u00a0<\/em>is a Lead Senior Scientist.<\/p>\n<p>News reports today indicate that the President is nominating Alexandra Dapolito Dunn for Assistant Administrator of EPA&#8217;s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, which implements the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).<\/p>\n<p>Here is our first take on what she will be facing and need to do, if confirmed:<\/p>\n<p>The major reforms Congress made to TSCA in 2016 passed with strong bipartisan support because they struck a careful balance among competing interests.\u00a0 Since that time, however, every aspect of the law\u2019s implementation by the Trump Administration has gone badly off the rails, skewed heavily in the chemical industry\u2019s favor at the expense of the public\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>In EDF\u2019s view, any credible nominee for the OCSPP Assistant Administrator needs to understand and acknowledge this stark imbalance and take steps to address it.\u00a0 The AA should be able and willing to facilitate a fundamental shift in TSCA implementation back to a course that comports with the law, reflects strong science, and is protective of public and worker health, including that of vulnerable subpopulations.<\/p>\n<p>If she is confirmed, Ms. Dunn will have her work cut out for her, given the forces arrayed within and outside the agency that have led to the current imbalance.\u00a0 That is a challenge that will need to be faced head-on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Denison, Ph.D.,\u00a0is a Lead Senior Scientist.
