{"id":8125,"date":"2018-08-20T09:52:03","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T14:52:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/?p=8125"},"modified":"2018-08-20T09:52:03","modified_gmt":"2018-08-20T14:52:03","slug":"walmart-joins-ranks-of-retailers-pulling-toxic-paint-strippers-from-shelves-when-will-epa-follow-suit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2018\/08\/20\/walmart-joins-ranks-of-retailers-pulling-toxic-paint-strippers-from-shelves-when-will-epa-follow-suit\/","title":{"rendered":"Walmart joins ranks of retailers pulling toxic paint strippers from shelves \u2013 when will EPA follow suit?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/people\/sarah-vogel\"><em>Sarah Vogel, Ph.D.<\/em><\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em>is Vice-President for Health.<\/p>\n<p>Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.walmart.com\/2018\/08\/20\/walmart-phasing-out-paint-removal-products-with-methylene-chloride-and-nmp\">Walmart announced<\/a> that it will stop selling paint strippers containing methylene chloride or N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in stores by February 2019 \u2013 making it the first general merchandise retailer to take such action.\u00a0 Walmart\u2019s announcement follows the strong leadership demonstrated by <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.lowes.com\/inside-lowes\/lowes-commitment-methylene-chloride-nmp\/\">Lowes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.homedepot.com\/methylene-chloride\">Home Depot<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/saferchemicals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/s-w_statement_6_15_18.pdf?x15132\">Sherwin Williams<\/a>, all of which have committed not to sell methylene chloride- and NMP-based paint stripping products by the end of the year.\u00a0 Importantly, Walmart\u2019s action goes beyond its U.S. stores, including those in Mexico, Canada, and Central America, as well as their online store.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement signals an important step by Walmart to better protect consumers from dangerous paint strippers. Methylene chloride is highly neurotoxic and acutely lethal. The chemical is responsible for over 50 reported deaths from acute exposure over the last 35 years \u2013 though many more likely have gone unreported. NMP is linked to fetal development problems, including low birth weight and birth defects.<\/p>\n<p>EDF has <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2015\/03\/31\/epa-identifies-another-risky-chemical-can-it-succeed-in-using-tsca-to-restrict-it\/\">advocated<\/a> for several years for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban both methylene chloride- and NMP-based paint strippers, using its enhanced authority under the reformed Toxic Substance Control Act.\u00a0 In January 2017, EPA proposed to ban methylene chloride and restrict NMP in paint strippers, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/19\/health\/epa-toxic-chemicals.html\">action has stalled under the Trump Administration<\/a>. \u00a0For over a year, the agency made no effort to finalize these actions \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2017\/12\/20\/systematic-slowdown-epa-indefinitely-delays-virtually-all-proposed-actions-to-restrict-chemicals-under-tsca\/\">even taking steps to delay any progress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This past May, families whose sons died from using paint strippers containing methylene chloride <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/opinion\/ny-oped-follow-through-and-ban-this-chemical-20180621-story.html\">met with former EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt<\/a> to personally ask him to finalize the ban on these products.\u00a0 Just two days after the meeting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-announces-action-methylene-chloride\">EPA announced<\/a> its intention to finalize the proposed ban on methylene chloride-based paint strippers.<\/p>\n<p>Three months later, EPA has yet to make good on its promise. \u00a0But retailers across the nation are stepping up.\u00a0 We applaud the leadership demonstrated by these retailers and strongly urge EPA to follow suit and ban methylene chloride- and NMP-based paint strippers.\u00a0 It is the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2018\/05\/15\/methylene-chloride-in-paint-strippers-a-ban-is-the-only-health-protective-path-forward\/\">only health-protective path forward<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn more: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Methylene chloride: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/health\/banning-methylene-chloride-paint-strippers\">https:\/\/www.edf.org\/health\/banning-methylene-chloride-paint-strippers<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>NMP: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/health\/nmp-n-methylpyrrolidone\">https:\/\/www.edf.org\/health\/nmp-n-methylpyrrolidone<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sarah Vogel, Ph.D.,\u00a0is Vice-President for Health.
