{"id":8033,"date":"2018-07-24T16:05:11","date_gmt":"2018-07-24T21:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/?p=8033"},"modified":"2024-02-12T11:02:10","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T16:02:10","slug":"six-senators-key-to-tsca-reform-question-epas-new-chemical-reviews-in-letter-to-wheeler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2018\/07\/24\/six-senators-key-to-tsca-reform-question-epas-new-chemical-reviews-in-letter-to-wheeler\/","title":{"rendered":"Six Senators key to TSCA reform question EPA\u2019s new chemical reviews in letter to Wheeler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Richard Denison, Ph.D.,\u00a0<\/em>is a Lead Senior Scientist.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/src.bna.com\/AA5\">letter sent today <\/a>to the Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler, six Senators who were instrumental to achieving the 2016 Lautenberg Act\u2019s reforms to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) raised \u201cserious concern\u201d about further weakening changes EPA is poised to make in its review of new chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>EDF had <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2018\/07\/17\/trumps-epa-pivots-yet-again-on-reviews-of-new-chemicals-under-tsca-leaving-public-and-worker-health-in-the-dust\/\">blogged <\/a>about the changes last week.<\/p>\n<p>The Senators\u2019 letter includes a \u201crequest that your staff brief our offices about the planned changes prior to moving to implement them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter was signed by Senators Tom Udall, Tom Carper, Sheldon Whitehouse, Ed Markey, Cory Booker, and Jeff Merkley.<\/p>\n<p>The Senators noted that \u201cWhile in the months after passage EPA began to implement these provisions in a manner we believe was faithful to both the letter and spirit of the law, beginning in the middle of last year EPA signaled it would change course by narrowing the scope of its new chemical reviews and the requisite risk determinations in a manner that deviated from the statute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EDF has for many months <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/tag\/new-chemicals\/\">raised concerns <\/a>over the steady effort by Trump Administration political appointees at EPA to undermine the provisions of the Lautenberg Act intended to significantly enhance EPA reviews of new chemicals prior to allowing them onto the market.\u00a0 The latest moves deviate even further from the requirements of the new law and threaten public and worker health.<\/p>\n<p>EDF hopes that today\u2019s letter will help convince EPA to return to a lawful, health-protective approach to conducting reviews of new chemicals under TSCA.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Denison, Ph.D.,\u00a0is a Lead Senior Scientist.
