The storm destroyed homes and businesses, prompted numerous rescues, and left Texans to piece their lives back together. Harvey also led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2017\/09\/08\/us\/houston-hurricane-harvey-harzardous-chemicals.html\">substantial releases of toxic chemicals<\/a> into communities.<\/p>\n<p>The Houston area is home to hundreds of chemical plants and refineries. While highly visible incidents, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/09\/02\/chemical-plant-explosion-thrusts-arkema-into-spotlight.html\">explosions at the Arkema chemical plant<\/a>, dominated news coverage, toxic chemical releases from plants occurred throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p>In this episode of our podcast, we spoke with EDF\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/people\/elena-craft\">Dr. Elena Craft<\/a>, who helped spearhead efforts to monitor these releases in real-time.
