Synthetic chemicals are used to make 96% of products in the United States. Yet scientific research continues to link chemicals in common use to health effects like cancer, infertility, and asthma.<\/p>\n<p>EDF selected <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/wristbands\">10 individuals across the country<\/a> to wear a novel wristband technology designed to detect chemicals in their environment for one week \u2013 including Gordon, Karen, and Averi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Gordon_firesuit-blog2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6487 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Gordon_firesuit-blog2-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"133\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Gordon_firesuit-blog2-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Gordon_firesuit-blog2-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Gordon_firesuit-blog2-768x961.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Gordon_firesuit-blog2-16x20.jpg 16w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Gordon_firesuit-blog2.jpg 1164w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 133px) 100vw, 133px\" \/><\/a>Gordon is a lieutenant for the Memphis Fire Department.\u00a0Gordon\u2019s wristband detected 16 chemicals, including gamma-chlordane, a pesticide that has been banned in the U.S. since the 1980s, and 3,4-dichlorophenyl isocyanate, a \u201cchemical intermediate,\u201d which is reportedly used exclusively for chemical manufacturing processes.\u00a0While there were no fires to fight the week he wore the wristband,\u00a0Gordon wondered if he came into contact with these chemicals from a <em><strong>site visit to a location that formerly housed chemical stockpiles, his local auto repair shop, the nearby highway \u2013 or even his fire suit.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Karen-blog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6489 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Karen-blog-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"133\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Karen-blog-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Karen-blog-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Karen-blog-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Karen-blog-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Karen-blog-1638x2048.jpg 1638w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Karen-blog-16x20.jpg 16w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/2017\/05\/Karen-blog.jpg 1912w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 133px) 100vw, 133px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Karen is an 8th\u00a0grade science teacher who engages her students in citizen science projects\u00a0like measuring air pollutants using portable air monitors. The chemical-detecting wristband was another great teaching tool for Karen&#8217;s students. Among other chemicals, Karen\u2019s wristband detected the flame retardant BDE 47, which was phased out of U.S. production in the mid-2000s due to health impacts on the developing brain and persistence in the environment.\u00a0Karen hopes that personal exposure monitors like the wristband will become more available to the general public in the future, noting that her students would love to wear the wristbands themselves: <strong><em>\u201cThe students are very curious. Averi\u2019s wristband detected several chemicals that can be found in personal care products \u2013 such as lotions, shampoos and conditioners \u2013 including the fragrance enhancer diethyl phthalate, the preservative benzyl benzoate and the synthetic fragrance galaxolide.
