the original post had erroneously identified the company as ALBEMARLE.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Yesterday the National Toxicology Program (NTP) <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ntp.niehs.nih.gov\/pubhealth\/roc\/roc13\/index.html\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">released its 13<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: small\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> Report on Carcinogens<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">.\u00a0 This periodic, Congressionally mandated report lists substances classified after a rigorous scientific review as either \u201cknown\u201d or \u201creasonably anticipated\u201d to be human carcinogens.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The 13<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: small\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> report includes 4 new listings:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ortho-Toluidine<\/span>, used to make rubber chemicals, pesticides, and dyes, was upgraded from its prior listing as \u201creasonably anticipated\u201d to now be listed as a known human carcinogen, based on <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">studies in humans showing it causes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">urinary bladder cancer<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Three chemicals are listed for the first time, each as <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens:<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">1-bromopropane<\/span>, used as a cleaning solvent and spray adhesive, inhalation of which has been shown in animal studies to produces <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">tumors in the skin, lungs, and large intestine<\/span>; <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">cumene<\/span>, used to make phenol and acetone, inhalation of which has been shown in animal studies to produces <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">tumors in the lungs and liver<\/span>; and <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pentachlorophenol<\/span>, a wood preservative mixture, exposure to which increases risk of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">non-Hodgkin lymphoma<\/span> in studies in humans and causes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">tumors in the liver and other organs<\/span> in mice<span style=\"color: #000000\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">EDF used the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/cdr\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">latest available data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> on the production and import of industrial chemicals collected by EPA under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to ascertain the extent to which these four chemicals are manufactured and used in the U.S.\u00a0 These data demonstrate that the four substances are all present in U.S. commerce in very large amounts, considered by EPA to be high production volume (HPV) chemicals because their manufacture exceeds one million pounds annually.\u00a0 In fact, all four chemicals are present in amounts <i>far higher than that level<\/i>, as shown below.\u00a0 <!--more--><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">We also used EPA data to identify the specific companies that make or import each chemical, summarized just below and listed in the table further below.\u00a0 Two of these chemicals are included in our <\/span><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/health\/toxics-across-america\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Toxics Across America<\/span><\/a><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\"> report and <\/span><\/span><\/span><a
