Mr. Joe Householder, Executive Director of the chemical industry front group, the Coalition for Chemical Safety, posted a comment the day before yesterday<\/a> responding to my last blog post<\/a> about a local Montana chapter of the coalition.\u00a0 Here\u2019s my reply:<\/p>\n

Mr. Householder:\u00a0 It certainly seems you want to have your cake and eat it, too.\u00a0 The Coalition obviously has launched a concerted effort to sign up small businesses, and it continues to purport that it\u2019s open to anyone \u2013 all in an effort to claim, as it does on its website, that it\u2019s comprised of \u201cpeople like you.\u201d\u00a0 The Montana small businesswoman quoted in the radio story is a Coalition member and was handing out Coalition literature at a Coalition-sponsored event at the time she was interviewed.<\/p>\n

Yet as soon as she (or, I presume, any one of your other members) speaks up and says something at odds with the chemical industry line, you quickly disavow her, saying she is not an \u201cofficial spokesperson.\u201d
\n<\/p>\n

You then try to claim the high road, asserting the Coalition \u201cdoes not take a position on any specific products\u201d and avoids \u201cengaging in specific product fights\u201d \u2013 truly remarkable statements, given the extent of lobbying against restrictions on specific products engaged in by the Coalition\u2019s principal member, the American Chemistry Council (see my last post for an example).<\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t it time, Mr. Householder, for the Coalition to end this charade and come out from behind the curtain?\u00a0 If it\u2019s not your members, just who are its \u201cofficial\u201d spokespeople, and for whom do they work?\u00a0 I assume you\u2019re one of those spokespeople \u2013 who is paying you to represent the Coalition?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
