{"id":2444,"date":"2012-11-12T14:44:51","date_gmt":"2012-11-12T19:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/nanotechnology\/?p=2444"},"modified":"2016-03-23T14:21:48","modified_gmt":"2016-03-23T19:21:48","slug":"edf-launches-website-on-epas-emerging-chemical-testing-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2012\/11\/12\/edf-launches-website-on-epas-emerging-chemical-testing-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"EDF launches website on EPA\u2019s emerging chemical testing programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/environmentaldefense.org\/page.cfm?tagID=62101\"><em>Jennifer McPartland, Ph.D.<\/em><\/a><em>, is a Health Scientist. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">New approaches for evaluating chemical hazard and risk are needed to help address substantial data gaps that exist for the thousands of chemicals currently in the marketplace as well as those yet to be introduced.\u00a0 \u00a0EPA has been investing significant resources to create research programs dedicated to advancing new types of chemical testing and assessment approaches.\u00a0 But what exactly are these approaches?\u00a0 How might they improve the practice of risk assessment?\u00a0 Are they appropriate for decision-making, and if so, what kinds of decision making?\u00a0 What role does the public interest community have to play?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;color: #000000;font-size: medium\">To explore these and other important issues, EDF\u2019s Health Program has launched a website, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/health\/chemical-testing-21st-century\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;color: #0000ff;font-size: medium\">Chemical Testing in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">,\u201d that provides an \u00a0introduction to these new approaches and the programs the EPA has built around them\u2014including their potential uses, benefits and limitations.\u00a0 The website includes the following informational resources:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/health\/chemical-testing-21st-century-primer\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Chemical Testing in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century: A Primer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0\u2013 An introduction to EPA\u2019s Computational Toxicology (CompTox) research initiative and its component programs, such as ToxCast; a discussion of the opportunities and challenges of these new testing programs; and a discussion of issues and needs for greater engagement by the public interest community.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/health\/chemical-testing-21st-century-webinar-series\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Chemical Testing in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century: Webinar Series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"> \u2013 Linked audio and video recordings of each of EDF\u2019s three webinars (held in October) featuring EDF and EPA scientists exploring the basics of EPA\u2019s new testing programs and the promises and challenges they present.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">We will soon be adding a page with descriptions of and links to additional resources.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jennifer McPartland, Ph.D., is a Health Scientist.
