{"id":2265,"date":"2012-07-25T05:30:13","date_gmt":"2012-07-25T10:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/nanotechnology\/?p=2265"},"modified":"2024-02-12T11:01:24","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T16:01:24","slug":"resources-for-todays-historic-markup-of-the-safe-chemicals-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2012\/07\/25\/resources-for-todays-historic-markup-of-the-safe-chemicals-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Resources for today&#8217;s historic markup of the Safe Chemicals Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Richard Denison, Ph.D.<\/em><em>, is a Senior Scientist.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s the day:\u00a0 At or about 10 am EDT this morning, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will take up a major amendment offered by Senator Lautenberg to his Safe Chemicals Act, which would for the first time overhaul the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>[UPDATE Wednesday afternoon:\u00a0 The EPW Committee voted 10-8 to pass the amended Safe Chemicals Act!!]<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some things that should help you to make sense of it all.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/epw.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Hearings.Hearing&amp;Hearing_ID=9a373e89-802a-23ad-41a6-35180a5a6bb1\">Yesterday&#8217;s Committee hearing<\/a>, with a focus on toxic flame retardants,\u00a0lived up to expectations that it would solidify the case for TSCA reform.\u00a0 Among many highlights, Jim Jones, head of the EPA office that administers TSCA, noted repeatedly that, had EPA\u00a0had more authority of the sort the Safe Chemicals Act would provide, it could have done more to identify and act against the flame retardant chemicals that all Americans now carry in our bodies.\u00a0 A former state legislator, a leading researcher and a firefighter offered compelling testimony of how the current federal system has failed us all.\u00a0 Watch the <a href=\"http:\/\/epw.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Hearings.Choose&amp;Hearing_id=9a373e89-802a-23ad-41a6-35180a5a6bb1\">webcast of the hearing here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/epw.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Hearings.Hearing&amp;Hearing_ID=bafa1647-802a-23ad-4762-4a2bc6d0edc9\">Committee&#8217;s notice of and agenda for the markup<\/a>.
