Every day in my email I get the American Chemistry Council\u2019s (ACC\u2019s) \u201cSmartBrief,\u201d a digest of the day\u2019s news related to the chemical industry.\u00a0 Here\u2019s its self-description<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Designed specifically for American chemistry professionals, ACC SmartBrief is a FREE, daily e-mail news briefing. It provides the latest news and information on the American chemistry industry.<\/p>\n

As I noted in my last blog post<\/a>, all this week the Chicago Tribune<\/em> has been running one of the biggest stories relating to the chemical industry<\/a> published in a long, long time.\u00a0 Titled \u201cPlaying with Fire,\u201d it documents in meticulous detail the campaign of deception that producers of chemical flame retardants have foisted on the American public for decades.<\/p>\n

One might expect, therefore, that ACC\u2019s SmartBrief this week would be directing its readers \u2013 who sign up to keep up with what they need to know that affects the chemical industry \u2013 to the Tribune<\/em>\u2019s series.\u00a0 One would be wrong.\u00a0 Nary a mention of this blockbuster story managed to find its way into SmartBrief this week.<\/p>\n

It appears that only certain<\/em> news relevant to SmartBrief\u2019s audience of American chemistry professionals is deemed essential enough to make the cut over at ACC.\u00a0 SmartBrief readers might need to look elsewhere if they want to know what\u2019s really affecting their industry.<\/p>\n

In fact, the only response to be found anywhere on ACC\u2019s website to this week\u2019s major news is this highly oblique press release<\/a> posted there yesterday.\u00a0 It makes no mention of the Tribune<\/em> series, but does affirm the industry\u2019s commitment to safety as a general matter.\u00a0 And it includes this tidbit:<\/p>\n

ACC always strives to conduct its advocacy work in an open and transparent manner.<\/p>\n
