{"id":17,"date":"2008-04-07T10:42:54","date_gmt":"2008-04-07T18:42:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/nanotechnology\/2008\/04\/07\/not-all-cnts-are-created-equal\/"},"modified":"2024-02-12T11:00:21","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T16:00:21","slug":"not-all-cnts-are-created-equal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2008\/04\/07\/not-all-cnts-are-created-equal\/","title":{"rendered":"My CNT is Better than Your CNT&#8230; Or At Least It&#8217;s Different"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><\/em><em>Cal Baier-Anderson, Ph.D.<\/em><em>, is a Health Scientist.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/nanotechnology\/2008\/04\/02\/getting-to-general-principles-are-we-making-progress\/\">posting<\/a> to this blog the other day, I came across a brand new study characterizing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iop.org\/EJ\/abstract\/0957-4484\/19\/18\/185706\/\">the heterogeneity of carbon nanotubes<\/a>.\u00a0 The authors of this study looked at 11 single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) from 10 different suppliers and found that SWCNT composition varies dramatically depending on synthesis method, feedstock, purification steps, and other factors.\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The authors note that SWCNTs contain up to 70% impurities.\u00a0 In this study, detected impurities include metals used commonly as catalysts, such as iron, nickel, cobalt and yttrium.\u00a0 Ironically, adding a purification step to remove residual metal catalysts can actually add small amounts of new metals, such as copper, lead, and chromium!\u00a0 The authors speculate that the acid washing process used in the purification step transfers metals from lab equipment to the SWCNTs, but this hypothesis needs to be tested.<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, the total carbon content of the SWCNT also varies considerably, ranging from 60-97%.\u00a0 Even more variable is the percentage of carbon in the lattice form that distinguishes SWCNT from amorphous carbon (a measure of structural purity): that ranged from 23\u201381%.<\/p>\n<p>The authors hypothesize that the heterogeneity of SWCNTs manufactured with different techniques could have a profound influence on the associated toxicity.\u00a0 This real-world heterogeneity seen even within one class of nanomaterials further illustrates how difficult it will be to derive general principles to predict the effects of exposure to nanomaterials on human health and the environment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cal Baier-Anderson, Ph.D., is a Health Scientist.
