{"id":16,"date":"2008-04-03T10:26:29","date_gmt":"2008-04-03T18:26:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/nanotechnology\/2008\/04\/03\/the-power-of-small-nano-hits-the-big-time\/"},"modified":"2024-02-12T11:02:31","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T16:02:31","slug":"the-power-of-small-nano-hits-the-big-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2008\/04\/03\/the-power-of-small-nano-hits-the-big-time\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Small:  Nano Hits the Big Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Richard Denison, Ph.D., is a Senior Scientist. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Or at least the small screen.\u00a0 Coming to your local PBS station this month is a three-part series on nanotechnology called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerofsmall.org\/\">The Power of Small<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 The segments cover three facets of the much-needed social debate about nanotechnology:\u00a0 privacy issues (e.g., nano-enabled tracking devices), ethical issues (focusing on the potential to greatly extend human life expectancy), and, of course, the environmental risks and applications. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I urge you to tune in.\u00a0 The series\u2019 website has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerofsmall.org\/stationlocator.php\">station locator<\/a> that can tell you where it\u2019s playing and when (unfortunately, each station decides whether and when to show it).\u00a0 Or you can watch the whole series in bite-sized pieces online on the series\u2019 website itself.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m telling you all this not only because I\u2019m featured in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerofsmall.org\/topicpages\/environment.php\">environment segment<\/a> (along with fellow nanobloggers <a href=\"http:\/\/community.safenano.org\/blogs\/andrew_maynard\/archive\/2008\/03\/28\/us-town-faces-nanotechnology-crisis.aspx\">Andrew Maynard<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/nanorisk.blogspot.com\/\">Kristen Kulinowski<\/a> and many others), but because I think the series does a fabulous job in airing the complex social, ethical, and environmental questions society needs to address \u2013 the earlier the better \u2013 in pursuing such a transformative set of technologies.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Power of Small<\/em> is the latest installment of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fredfriendly.org\/\">Fred Friendly Seminars<\/a> series.\u00a0 For you younger folks, no, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fred_Friendly\">Fred Friendly<\/a> is not a kids\u2019 cartoon character.\u00a0 In the 1950s, together with Edward R. Murrow, Friendly was among the first in journalism to take on Senator Joseph McCarthy and was a staunch advocate for a strong press and unfettered public access to information.\u00a0 George Clooney famously brought Friendly (and that dark era) back to life by starring as him in the excellent 2005 film, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0433383\/\">Good Night, and Good Luck<\/a> (which Clooney also directed and co-wrote).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Denison, Ph.D., is a Senior Scientist.
