The report, <a href=\"https:\/\/toxicslink.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Toxics%20Link_Toxic%20Threads%20Assessing%20Nonylphenol%20in%20Indian%20Textiles%20and%20the%20Environment.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Toxic Threads<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> was published by the Indian environmental research and advocacy organization Toxics Link in partnership with Environmental Defense Fund.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 466px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13283\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/\/graphic-1-uses-of-NP-from-toxic-threads-report.png\" alt=\"Common industrial applications of nonylphenol chemical\" width=\"466\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/graphic-1-uses-of-NP-from-toxic-threads-report.png 466w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/11\/files\/graphic-1-uses-of-NP-from-toxic-threads-report-281x300.png 281w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Common industrial applications of nonylphenol chemical (Toxics Link)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What is NP and where does it come from?<\/strong> NP is a chemical byproduct of degrading nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), which manufacturers across several sectors use as a base ingredient in detergents, wetting agents, dispersants, defoamers, de-inkers and antistatic agents. Textile producers use NPEs most commonly in cleaning agents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <em>Toxic Threads<\/em> report\u2019s key findings include<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">NP was detected in 15 of the 40 products examined (about 35%).<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">NP levels in 13 out of the 40 products exceeded the current EU limit (&lt;100 mg\/kg).<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">60% (9 out of 15) of baby and children\u2019s products contained NP.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">Female innerwear made with hosiery had the highest NP concentration of all garment types.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">Significant NP contamination was found in several rivers near key Indian textile hubs.<\/li>\n<li>NP\u2019s presence in downstream locations and absence upstream strongly suggests point-source pollution from industrial activities, particularly textile manufacturing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> NP is an endocrine disruptor and has been linked to cancer. People, particularly children, can be exposed to it through everyday products they touch or might put in their mouths. NP\u2019s persistence (how long it lasts), toxicity and ability to build up in the body over time makes it a significant threat to human health, the environment, marine ecosystems and the food chain.
