{"id":1230,"date":"2011-03-18T07:58:55","date_gmt":"2011-03-18T12:58:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/nanotechnology\/?p=1230"},"modified":"2024-02-12T11:01:12","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T16:01:12","slug":"advocates-to-treat-chemical-industry-to-free-lunch-at-next-weeks-globalchem-no-joke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2011\/03\/18\/advocates-to-treat-chemical-industry-to-free-lunch-at-next-weeks-globalchem-no-joke\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocates to treat chemical industry to free lunch at next week\u2019s GlobalChem \u2013 no joke!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Richard Denison, Ph.D.<\/em><em>, is a Senior Scientist.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>[Update 2:20 EDT:\u00a0 For GlobalChem attendees who would like to attend our luncheon but won&#8217;t yet be at the conference on Monday, we have a call-in number you can use:\u00a0 (800) 256-8682; code 43491.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Next week is the chemical industry\u2019s annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalchem.org\/\"><em>GlobalChem<\/em><\/a> bash in Baltimore.\u00a0 Like last year, there will be <a href=\"https:\/\/custom.cvent.com\/C271F09FCFFE4421905B407FFD6C57C9\/files\/866f2f8f742944d3acd7b04c8504ad5f.pdf\">a session on \u201cmodernization\u201d of the Toxic Substances Control Act<\/a> (TSCA).\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/nanotechnology\/2010\/03\/31\/getting-down-to-brass-tacks-defining-differences-in-positions-on-tsca-reform\/\">I was the NGO representative in that session last year<\/a>, but alas, my inbox never saw an invite this year.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s session will instead be limited to four industry speakers and there won\u2019t be anyone from the advocacy community speaking in any other session of this year\u2019s conference.<\/p>\n<p>Might that be because the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saferchemicals.org\/\"><em>Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families<\/em><\/a> coalition that EDF helped found held a rally in plain view of last year\u2019s conference that featured a <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.saferchemicals.org\/2010\/03\/you-cant-duck-real-tsca-reform.html\">20-foot-high rubber ducky and the message:\u00a0 \u201cChemical industry \u2014 You can\u2019t duck real reform!\u201d<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>But no matter.\u00a0 To show our magnanimity, our coalition will be back this year on the first day (Monday, March 21) of the GlobalChem conference \u2013 and this time we\u2019ll be offering a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_lunch\"><em>free lunch<\/em><\/a> to the participants.\u00a0 Lunch will be served from 11:30-12:30 in the same hotel, the Hilton Baltimore, that is hosting the industry conference.\u00a0 But there\u2019s more than just lunch on the menu \u2026 .\u00a0\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While this is not what I would call a catch, our luncheon will feature four speakers who will provide alternative perspectives on what is needed in TSCA Modernization.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saferchemicals.org\/2011\/03\/chemical-safety-advocates-to-hold-alternative-policy-briefing-at-annual-globalchem-industry-conference-in-baltimore.html\">luncheon details are here<\/a>, but the speakers will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Andy Igrejas<\/strong>, National Campaign Director, Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families<\/li>\n<li><strong>Richard A. Denison<\/strong>, PhD, Senior Scientist, Environmental Defense Fund<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ariana Kelly<\/strong>, Maryland State Delegate and former National Campaign Director for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.momsrising.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MomsRising.org<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Howard Williams<\/strong>, Vice President and General Manager of Construction Specialties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(Curiously enough, although we made our reservation over a month ago for the Calloway Room on the same (2<sup>nd<\/sup>) floor of the hotel as GlobalChem, just a day after our advisory announcing the briefing went out, the hotel told us we were to be moved to a more distant location!\u00a0 Further inquiries led to hotel staff informing us that this was done at ACC\u2019s behest upon learning of our event.\u00a0 When we made clear the intent of our event, the staff agreed to return us to the original room.\u00a0 So \u2013 as of this posting \u2013 we\u2019re still slated for the <strong>Calloway Room in the North Foyer<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p>We welcome any and all GlobalChem participants to attend.\u00a0 If you\u2019re interested and can do so, please RSVP today to Shayna Samuels at 718-541-4785 or <a href=\"mailto:shayna@ripplestrategies.com\">shayna@ripplestrategies.com<\/a>.\u00a0 That way, we can make sure we have enough lunch.\u00a0 But if you forget to RSVP, please feel free to come by anyway \u2013 we\u2019ll order extra!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Denison, Ph.D., is a Senior Scientist.
