This is welcome news for our health, the country\u2019s infrastructure, and the economy. We are glad to see the attention on this issue from Congress and from the Administration with the inclusion of funding to fully replace lead pipes in the President&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/03\/31\/fact-sheet-the-american-jobs-plan\/\">American Jobs Plan<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s no wonder there is growing interest in this initiative, the <a href=\"https:\/\/navigatorresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Navigator-Update-04.15.2021.pdf\">latest polling<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0from the Navigator shows support for funding lead pipe replacement at 83% nationally &#8211; including 73% of Republicans, 80% of Independents, and 91% of Democrats. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This echoes <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2021\/03\/25\/an-issue-nearly-everyone-agrees-on-its-time-to-fund-lead-pipe-replacement\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=edf-health_none_upd_hlth&amp;utm_medium=social-media&amp;utm_id=1616683798\">earlier polls<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which have found similar overwhelming <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ClimatePower\/status\/1387441811036200964\">bipartisan support<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As EDF has <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2020\/04\/16\/infrastructure-stimulus-bill-lead-pipe-replacement-funding\/\">written before<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a $45 billion investment in lead pipe replacement over ten years would:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Protect public health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by enabling water systems around the country to quickly begin eliminating the LSLs to protect residents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>More than pay for itself. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fully replacing lead service lines across the country would <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2020\/02\/20\/lslr-reduced-cardiovascular-disease-deaths\/\">yield more than $205 billion <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in societal benefits over 35 years \u2014 a 450% return on the investment \u2013 due to prevented heart disease deaths from adult lead exposure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Permanently upgrade infrastructure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by facilitating critical upgrades to water distribution systems in a way that protects residents from increased lead in their drinking water when the LSL is disturbed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reduce disparities <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by enabling utilities to fully replace LSLs, thereby resolving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/u4296\/LeadPipe_EnvironJustice_AU%20and%20EDF%20Report.pdf\">equity concerns <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that utilities currently face in replacing the lead pipe on private property.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Create jobs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the plumbers and contractors who will perform the LSL replacements.
