Fully replacing LSLs poses a myriad of challenges \u2013 cost chief amongst them \u2013 but replacement is critical to protecting the public from the harms posed by lead exposure. It is also a necessary step to upgrading the country\u2019s aging water infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>To assist water systems, elected officials, health professionals, and other key stakeholders with navigating these challenges to accelerating LSL replacement, the Lead Service Line Replacement Collaborative developed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lslr-collaborative.org\/\">online toolkit<\/a> several years ago. EDF is a founding member of the Collaborative, which now has 27 members representing public health, water utility, environmental, labor, consumer, housing, and state and local governmental organizations. The toolkit includes everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lslr-collaborative.org\/replacement.html\">technical replacement information<\/a> to recent LSL replacement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lslr-collaborative.org\/news\">news<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lslr-collaborative.org\/equity.html\">equity considerations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, the Collaborative is featuring <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lslr-collaborative.org\/case-examples.html\"><strong>case examples<\/strong><\/a><strong> and interviews with states, water utilities, and advocates advancing LSL replacement with innovative strategies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The case examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lslr-collaborative.org\/uploads\/9\/2\/0\/2\/92028126\/supporting_private_side_replacement_-_interview_with_rebecca_scott__v2_-_formatted.pdf\">Unlocking Funding to Support Private-Side LSL Replacement<\/a>: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources\u2019 Rebecca Scott outlines steps the state has taken to provide funding to communities and unexpected challenges they encountered along the way: \u201cIn general, small communities need more tailored assistance\u2026I\u2019ve learned that flexibility is key.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lslr-collaborative.org\/uploads\/9\/2\/0\/2\/92028126\/community_groups_role_in_supporting_lsl_replacement_v2_-_formatted.pdf\">Roles for Community Groups in LSL Replacement Efforts<\/a>: \u201cWe had a dedicated Department of Public Works and a community used to advocating for itself. With the funding, we had everything we needed. I see our role as creating momentum. We helped the city see this was doable.\u201d Clean Water Fund\u2019s Maureo Fern\u00e1ndez y Mora describes how CWF served as both an ally to the water utility in Chelsea, Massachusetts and a bridge to the community to accelerate LSL replacement.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lslr-collaborative.org\/uploads\/9\/2\/0\/2\/92028126\/final_lslc_-_working_with_critical_customers_-_interview_denver_water_-_formatted.pdf\">Working with Critical Customers to Replace LSLs<\/a>: Child care facilities and schools are \u201ccritical customers\u201d for water utilities to coordinate LSL replacement. Denver Water\u2019s Alexis Woodrow offers insights from the utility\u2019s experience working with public schools, charter schools, and other facilities: \u201cThe process of replacing an LSL ultimately requires working closely with the person in charge of the property, whether that\u2019s the homeowner, the on-site manager or facilities manager or an off-site organizational coordinator.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lslr-collaborative.org\/uploads\/9\/2\/0\/2\/92028126\/how_state_agencies_can_support_lsl_replacement_case_example_washington_state--approved_formatted.pdf\">How State Agencies Can Support LSL Replacement<\/a>: \u201cGive praise where it is due. Washington made a point to acknowledge and draw media attention to communities that were proactive in addressing lead in their water systems.\u201d Washington Department of Health\u2019s Scott Torpie describes lessons learned from inventorying LSLs following a state directive, funding projects, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Collaborative will continue updating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lslr-collaborative.org\/case-examples.html\">Case Examples page<\/a> to highlight additional stories. <a href=\"mailto:feedback@lslr-collaborative.org\">Let them know<\/a> if you have an example!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sam Lovell, Project Manager.
