This lush landscape, teeming with birds and wildlife, is an example of what Louisiana\u2019s coast can look like if we use the Mississippi River to build land and increase the state\u2019s resilience to storms and rising seas. It\u2019s truly a beautiful place.<\/p>\n<p>In stark contrast, a short plane ride over the region from New Orleans shows the true reality: Much of Louisiana\u2019s coast is disappearing, as coastal wetlands cut off from the Mississippi River turn into open water. This Swiss cheese effect is startling when seen from the air.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The best way to see and understand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/ecosystems\/restoring-mississippi-river-delta\">Louisiana\u2019s land loss crisis<\/a> is by plane or boat. Unfortunately, it\u2019s impossible to scale these trips or bring everyone to the coast.<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;This virtual reality tool is helping build resilience on Louisiana\u2019s vulnerable coasts #Fourthwave&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>How do we replicate that bird\u2019s-eye-view and on-the-ground experience? Rather than bringing people to the coast, how do we bring the coast to people? The answer: virtual reality.<\/p>\n<p>EDF and the <a href=\"http:\/\/mississippiriverdelta.org\/\">Restore the Mississippi River Delta<\/a> coalition did just that when we created \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/mississippiriverdelta.org\/media-resources\/360-degrees-coast\/\">Coast 360: A Virtual Day in the Delta<\/a>.\u201d This innovative, 360 video experience uses technology to take viewers to the forefront of Louisiana\u2019s land loss crisis and show them areas of the coast that are losing \u2013 and gaining \u2013 land.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"jumpOut nextButton\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2015\/09\/16\/recovery-of-new-england-rabbit-demonstrates-importance-of-private-lands-in-conservation\/\"><span class=\"boxInner\">Making our coastal communities more resilient<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mississippiriverdelta.org\/media-resources\/360-degrees-coast\/\">Coast 360<\/a> helps make this crisis, and the restoration solutions available to help fix it, more accessible and easier to understand.
