{"id":8910,"date":"2018-01-09T09:40:38","date_gmt":"2018-01-09T14:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/?p=8910"},"modified":"2025-06-10T16:59:06","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T20:59:06","slug":"im-a-rancher-and-i-support-the-endangered-species-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2018\/01\/09\/im-a-rancher-and-i-support-the-endangered-species-act\/","title":{"rendered":"I\u2019m a rancher, and I support the Endangered Species Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent op-ed for <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/energy-environment\/364980-the-endangered-species-act-is-an-ineffective-regulatory-burden\">The Hill<\/a>, Robert Henneke of the Texas Public Policy Foundation shared his opinion that \u201cThe Endangered Species Act is an ineffective regulatory burden.\u201d I believe Mr. Henneke lacked a full perspective of the bedrock American environmental policy.<\/p>\n<p>As a fellow Texan, I was surprised to see Mr. Henneke forget about the great wildlife success stories in our home state. The <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2017\/07\/25\/15-birds-an-american-conservation-movement\/?_ga=2.134443382.661387299.1515420060-320992522.1492028914\">whooping crane<\/a>, the Kemp&#8217;s Ridley <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2017\/09\/29\/sea-turtles-swim-towards-a-brighter-future\/?_ga=2.131225992.661387299.1515420060-320992522.1492028914\">sea turtle<\/a> and the Northern\u00a0Aplomado\u00a0Falcon have all experienced growing populations in Texas, thanks to conservation efforts made possible by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Though they are still classified as \u201cendangered,\u201d these species have turned the trajectory from extinction to recovery, so I wouldn\u2019t say the Act is ineffective, and I certainly wouldn\u2019t go so far as Mr. Henneke does to call it \u201ca terrible approach\u201d to saving species with \u201can abysmal track record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a sixth generation rancher in Brady, Texas. My husband George and I love and care for the land, the livestock, and the wide variety of Texas wildlife that call our ranch home. <!--more-->That\u2019s why we were eager to sign up as pilot participants of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/ecosystems\/monarch-butterfly-habitat-exchange\">Monarch Butterfly Habitat Exchange<\/a> \u2013 the very program Mr. Henneke describes as an effective voluntary program that \u201cshould be allowed to flourish.\u201d I agree with Mr. Henneke on this point. Landowners can provide the habitat, but who will pay for it?<\/p>\n<p>The ESA provides a much needed incentive for public and private investment in conservation.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a 2019 listing decision deadline for the monarch butterfly.
