Collaboration, not confrontation."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Y1C0891.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6257\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6257 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Y1C0891-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Farmers picking corn\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Y1C0891-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Y1C0891-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Y1C0891-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Y1C0891.jpg 1382w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>One year ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced 10 \u201cbuilding blocks\u201d for climate-smart agriculture and forestry, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 120 million metric tons by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The agency\u2019s focus on partnering with farmers and ranchers \u2013 as well as with the private sector \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2015\/04\/23\/usdas-new-climate-strategy-is-a-huge-step-in-the-right-direction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was a huge step in the right direction<\/a> toward widespread implementation of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/09\/25\/what-is-climate-smart-agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">climate-smart agriculture<\/a>\u00a0techniques and programs.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack will announce another big investment in conservation stewardship and climate-smart agriculture approaches to advance the building blocks agenda. I\u2019ll be joining Secretary Vilsack to talk about EDF\u2019s partnerships within the agricultural supply chain and our collaborative approach to ag sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>Working across public-private sector lines, through a collaborative approach, and with the entire ag supply chain is the only way to bring sustainability to scale while protecting farmers\u2019 livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what key sectors of the ag supply chain are doing \u2013 and can do \u2013 to improve water quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and increase agricultural resilience.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Food companies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Walmart_Store_RF.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6191\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6191 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Walmart_Store_RF-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Walmart\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Walmart_Store_RF-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Walmart_Store_RF.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Walmart\u2019s commitment to advance fertilizer efficiency within its supply chain, announced in 2013, set off a chain of action from food companies interested in sustainable sourcing. Today, EDF is working with Smithfield Foods, Unilever, Kellogg\u2019s, Campbell\u2019s, and General Mills to create demand for sustainable grains, improve on-farm conservation practices, and protect yields.<\/p>\n<p>But these efforts alone are not enough to make lasting change. We need additional food companies, including within the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2016\/02\/23\/animal-feed-is-at-the-heart-of-grain-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">animal agriculture sector<\/a>, to take action by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assessing their climate and water footprints and improving transparency with customers.<\/li>\n<li>Developing commitments to achieve specific environmental targets, and investing in the research, partnerships, and capacity needed to turn these commitments into action.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting initiatives that help farmers meet sustainable sourcing market demand, such as United Suppliers\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustain.ag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SUSTAIN\u2122<\/a>\u00a0platform.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in initiatives like Field to Market, to accelerate understanding of how best to measure sustainability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Agricultural retailers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Sustain-logo.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6258\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6258\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Sustain-logo-300x300.png\" alt=\"Sustain logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Sustain-logo-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Sustain-logo-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Sustain-logo-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/05\/Sustain-logo.png 897w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>After learning about Walmart\u2019s fertilizer initiative, ag retail cooperative United Suppliers reached out to EDF for help in building SUSTAIN, a fertilizer efficiency and soil health program that positions their ag retailers \u2013 and their farmer customers \u2013 as sustainable agriculture leaders. SUSTAIN trains ag retailers in using proven, effective technologies, practices, and products that advance fertilizer efficiency and soil health, and the retail staff then bring this knowledge to the growers they serve.<\/p>\n<p>United Suppliers has committed to getting 10 million acres in fertilizer efficiency and soil health measures by 2020 \u2013 the largest commitment by any agribusiness or food company to date. And now, companies such as Smithfield Foods, Unilever, Campbell Soup, Kellogg, and General Mills are all using SUSTAIN as part of their sustainable sourcing commitments.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s why other ag retailers should get on board with sustainability, too:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As the go-to advisors for the majority of commodity crop farmers, ag retailers are in an ideal position to provide counsel to growers on the best practices to advance soil health, fertilizer efficiency, and other practices that reduce air and water pollution.<\/li>\n<li>These practices can save growers money and improve their resilience, thereby increasing customer loyalty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nutrientstar.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NutrientStar<\/a>, which offers independent, science-based assessments of fertilizer efficiency tools, can also help ag retailers sort through the growing array of fertilizer efficiency tools on the market to help their growers make informed purchasing decisions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Government <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/02\/shutterstock_144822175.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5931\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5931 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/02\/shutterstock_144822175-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Farmers shaking hands\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/02\/shutterstock_144822175-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/02\/shutterstock_144822175-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2016\/02\/shutterstock_144822175-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>There is tremendous opportunity to align government conservation efforts with supply chain momentum to bring climate-smart agriculture to scale.<\/p>\n<p>EDF is working directly with USDA\u2019s Regional Conservation Partnerships Program, to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2016\/03\/31\/usda-gives-big-boost-to-sustainable-farming-in-north-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">advance sustainable farming practices in North Carolina<\/a> in collaboration with Smithfield Foods, and with partners in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iowaagriculture.gov\/press\/2016Press\/press02122016.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iowa<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilcorn.org\/icga\/icga-news\/article\/2016\/02\/il-corn-precision-conservation-program-receives-national-grant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Illinois<\/a>. USDA\u2019s Natural Resources Conservation Service has also supported EDF and our supply chain partners through Conservation Innovation Grants to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2015\/09\/15\/agricultural-carbon-markets-get-yet-another-boost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">advance agricultural carbon markets<\/a> and on-the-ground conservation practices.<\/p>\n<p>But USDA can play an even larger role in collaborating with the supply chain for greater impact, at scale, by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensuring that agricultural policies, from conservation programs to crop insurance, are aligned with private sector sustainable sourcing efforts to drive continuous improvement across the entire sector and improve overall resilience.
