If you can&#8217;t quite see how it matters to you, personally, you might want to take a peek inside your pantry. Or your candy jar. Because it might just affect your access to everything from cheese to chocolate.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/media\/edf-statement-usdas-climate-change-agriculture-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Today\u2019s report<\/a> represents an urgent call to action for food companies, policymakers and agribusinesses to collaborate in reducing\u00a0emissions from food production and implementing farming practices that increase resilience.<\/p>\n<p>We have the tools at our disposal to make sustainable agriculture a reality. But to implement these measures at scale, we need increased investment from the private sector and collaboration across the agricultural supply chain. We need to go beyond commitments and towards on-the-ground support for farmers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenges on the horizon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The risk that climate change poses to farmers, especially in developing countries, is unprecedented. The report\u2019s findings note that if we continue with business as usual, climate change will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Threaten food security and food safety.<\/li>\n<li>Dramatically reduce yields \u2013 by 2020, yields will drop substantially for corn, soybeans, rice, sorghum, cotton, and oats.<\/li>\n<li>Disrupt global food production with price fluctuations and trade-related challenges such as transportation and infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li>Cause the number of people at risk of undernourishment to increase by 175 million people over the next 65 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But the effects of climate change are already here. Climate change has for example reduced yield increases\u00a0for world grain farmers by 2.5 percent since 2000. That\u2019s why <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2015\/11\/24\/food-production-doesnt-have-a-seat-at-the-paris-climate-talks-but-we-cant-wait-for-an-invitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we can\u2019t wait to make changes<\/a> and implement a more sustainable and resilient food system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2015\/12\/farmer-photo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5709\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2015\/12\/farmer-photo-300x199.png\" alt=\"farmer photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2015\/12\/farmer-photo-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2015\/12\/farmer-photo.png 445w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>When I think of innovation, resiliency, and adaptation, I think of farmers.\u00a0 And <a href=\"http:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/USDAOC\/bulletins\/128835d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as the USDA noted<\/a>, \u201cThe agricultural sector has a strong record of adapting to changing conditions.\u201d That\u2019s why I\u2019m confident that farmers, food companies, and policymakers will embrace the unprecedented opportunities at our fingertips. The report finds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identifying the biggest vulnerabilities in agriculture will allow policymakers to target support where it is needed most.<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring that farms are able to adapt to climate change will reduce the risk of disruptions to the food system.<\/li>\n<li>Reducing food waste will reduce the risk of food insecurity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fertilizer efficiency and soil health measures such as cover crops can also mean cost-savings and yield benefits for farmers \u2013 a win-win for growers and the planet. Farmers can also start participating in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2015\/09\/15\/agricultural-carbon-markets-get-yet-another-boost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">agricultural carbon markets<\/a>, where they are rewarded for implementing conservation practices.<\/p>\n<p>But to turn these opportunities into action, we need the private sector to do more than make statements on sustainability.
