I like to think about it as Airbnb for wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>Just as Airbnb allows private homeowners to get paid for opening a spare bedroom to travelers, habitat exchanges allow private landowners such as farmers and ranchers to get paid for providing quality habitat for vulnerable wildlife. The revenue is supplied by infrastructure developers seeking to mitigate the environmental impact of their projects.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Now is the time for us to come together to change the business of conservation to benefit all.&#8221; &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/10\/29\/a-cattlemans-quest-to-save-a-bird-and-help-ranchers-thrive\/\" target=\"_blank\">Terry Fankhauser<\/a>,\u00a0executive vice president of the Colorado Cattlemen\u2019s Association<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>An example from Colorado <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In places like Colorado, energy companies, agriculture leaders and that state worked together to develop the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.habitatexchanges.org\/exchanges\/greater-sage-grouse\/colorado-habitat-exchange\/\" target=\"_blank\">Colorado Habitat Exchange<\/a> \u2013 a program that provides a fast and efficient means of moving mitigation dollars from oil and gas operations to ranchers with the most potential for restoring sagebrush habitat.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5498\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5498\" style=\"width: 681px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2015\/09\/graphic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5498\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2015\/09\/graphic.jpg\" alt=\"In a habitat exchange, landowners benefit from new revenue for creating or maintaining habitat. An earlier iteration of the program worked to recover <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2015\/06\/09\/operation-warbler-fort-hood-and-local-ranchers-team-up-to-save-bird\/\" target=\"_blank\">golden-cheeked warblers<\/a> in Texas and the next version is being adapted for the monarch butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, the agriculture community will be critical partners in conservation efforts for the butterfly, but we can\u2019t expect them to do it for free.
