Rising temperatures could force California vintners to grow their grapes in higher altitudes where they would encroach on habitat important to moose, grizzly bears and grey wolves. Whether production will be sustained remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>As a Californian, a wine connoisseur and a lover of wildlife, this breaks my heart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melting chocolate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cocoa \u2013 one of West Africa&#8217;s most important cash crops and one of the world&#8217;s guiltiest pleasures \u2013 will also be greatly affected by warmer temperatures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2015\/02\/but.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4780\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2015\/02\/but-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"nuts\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2015\/02\/but-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2015\/02\/but.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Farmers will begin to see declines in cocoa production by 2030 due to drastic changes in cocoa-growing topography, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/climate-change-could-melt-chocolate-production\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dry fruit and toasty nuts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Climate change is expected to alter the global industry in fruits and nuts dramatically as tree crops such as pistachios and cherries struggle in the rising temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>In California, the extreme multi-year drought doesn\u2019t bode well for local fruit and nut producers, who provide roughly 50 percent of the nation\u2019s fruits and vegetables, and nearly 100 percent of the nation\u2019s apricots, almonds, pistachios and walnuts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the love of food, it\u2019s time we rewrite this story to have a happier ending<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There is still time and opportunity for farmers to adapt to changing weather and to pursue practices that increase the resiliency of the natural environment.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why EDF is working with farmers, food companies and ag service providers on solutions that create healthier ecosystems and a more robust global food system.
