In the U.S., we saw food companies and agribusiness like <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/10\/14\/how-one-business-is-reducing-nutrient-losses-on-10-million-acres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United Suppliers<\/a> step up to the plate to meet Walmart\u2019s new demand for sustainable grains, and EDF\u2019s launch of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/10\/06\/a-business-smart-approach-to-ending-fertilizer-pollution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sustainable Sourcing Initiative<\/a>. We also saw the launch of the United Nations\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/09\/25\/what-is-climate-smart-agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Alliance for Climate-Smart Agriculture<\/a>, which aims to enable 500 million farmers worldwide to practice sustainable farming.<\/p>\n<p>On the Colorado River, countless stakeholders including U.S. and Mexican policymakers, conservation organizations and farmers came together to orchestrate and witness the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/04\/after-54-years-thirst-us-and-mexico-partner-save-colorado-river-delta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado River Delta pulse flow<\/a> \u2013 the temporary release of water across the United States-Mexico border that brought relief and restoration to the dry, empty river delta ecosystem \u2013 an historic accomplishment for people and the environment.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->EDF and partners also laid the framework for pilot <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/10\/03\/new-federal-framework-provides-path-forward-for-landowners-and-sage-grouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">habitat exchanges<\/a> to take place in 2015 that will protect species such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/10\/09\/wyoming-ranchers-steward-land-cattle-and-the-greater-sage-grouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">greater sage-grouse<\/a>. And, for the first time, the California Air Resources Board (ARB) <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/12\/18\/california-takes-giant-step-toward-approving-first-crop-based-carbon-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">considered a land-based carbon offset protocol<\/a> that will allow U.S. rice growers to earn additional revenue for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from cultivation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what lies ahead for 2015? And what remains to be done? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We asked some of our Growing Returns expert bloggers to share their hopes, dreams, visions, and goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reducing ag\u2019s GHG footprint <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/canstockphoto20602048.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4630\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/canstockphoto20602048-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"canstockphoto20602048\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/canstockphoto20602048-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/canstockphoto20602048-1024x698.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>From <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/author\/rparkhurst\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Robert Parkhurst<\/em><\/a><em>, EDF director of Agriculture Greenhouse Gas Markets:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My vision of success for 2015 would be to see rice growers from California and Arkansas generate 15,000 tons of offsets for the California cap-and-trade market.\u00a0These will be the first greenhouse gas offsets generated by farmers, ever.<\/li>\n<li>Along these lines, I look forward to seeing the ARB begin development of a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/06\/18\/fertilizer-efficiency-credits-seed-the-market-for-agricultural-offsets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nutrient management protocol<\/a> which applies to rice, almonds and corn, and unlocks the potential development of millions of tons of greenhouse gas reductions. I also expect to see more than 500,000 acres of U.S. farmland generate voluntary offsets from the American Carbon Registry\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/10\/16\/spreading-compost-on-the-range-can-earn-ranchers-new-revenue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fertilizer management protocol.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Improving fertilizer efficiency and water quality <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/Improving-efficiency.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4633\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/Improving-efficiency-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Improving efficiency\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/Improving-efficiency-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/Improving-efficiency.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>From <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/author\/sfriedman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Suzy Friedman<\/em><\/a><em>, EDF director of Agricultural Sustainability:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I look forward to seeing the launch and rollout of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/10\/14\/how-one-business-is-reducing-nutrient-losses-on-10-million-acres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United Suppliers\u2019 SUSTAIN platform<\/a> not only draw significant interest and enrollment from ag retailers and their growers, but also generate significant new business and growth for United Suppliers and its retailers. This will reflect strong interest and engagement in sustainable agriculture from food companies and growers, who are reaping economic benefits.<\/li>\n<li>I would also like to see additional major food companies and retailers set measurable goals and commitments for sustainable sourcing of commodity crops, GHG emissions reductions, and water quality improvements, and those with existing commitments making rapid progress on those goals.
