Last week, the Department of Interior and other executive branch offices <a href=\"http:\/\/m.whitehouse.gov\/blog\/2014\/12\/09\/unleashing-climate-data-and-innovation-more-resilient-ecosystems\" target=\"_blank\">released more data<\/a> specific to water and ecosystems, as well as new geospatial tools, that will help natural resource managers \u2013 including farmers \u2013 better prepare for the future.<\/p>\n<p>The newly released data sets include critical information about stream flow, soil, land cover and biodiversity, and are complemented by tools that will enable users to visualize and overlay data sets related to ecosystems, land use, water and wildlife. Together, the new data and tools will help farmers build resilience to the impacts of changing weather.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>What kind of climate impacts?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The National Climate Assessment, released in May 2014, confirmed that climate disruptions to agriculture have been increasing and are projected to become more severe over this century, with potentially devastating impacts on the agricultural sector. These impacts include changes in crop yields \u2013 which <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/2014\/06\/30\/climate-change-a-risky-business-for-americas-agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\">could drop 73 percent<\/a> in some states \u2013 and increases in food prices as a result of higher temperatures, heavier downpours, and more frequent and intense droughts.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the assessment found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Average U.S<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>temperatures have increased by 1.3 to 1.9\u00a0degrees Fahrenheit since record-keeping began in 1895. \u00a0Most of this warming has occurred since 1970.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S. will likely see more warming in the next few decades \u2013 possibly up to another four degrees Fahrenheit in some areas.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S. is seeing increasingly intense heat waves in the western portion of the country, and increasingly intense flooding in the eastern portion.<\/li>\n<li>Droughts in the Southwest and heat waves everywhere are projected to become more intense in the future.<\/li>\n<li>Climate change increases the likelihood of water shortages. The western U.S. relies heavily on mountain snowpack for water storage, and spring snowpack is declining in most of the West.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How does data help?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Climate Data Initiative is designed to connect farmers, food distributors and agricultural businesses with the data, tools and information they need to understand how these impacts are going to affect their operations and, ultimately, their bottom lines.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4601\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4601\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/ecoinforma.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4601 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/ecoinforma-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"The EcoINFORMA map viewer available on data.gov\/ecosystems enables visualizations and mashups of spatial data related to ecosystems, natural resources and species\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/ecoinforma-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/2014\/12\/ecoinforma.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4601\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The EcoINFORMA map viewer available on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.data.gov\/ecosystems\/\" target=\"_blank\">data.gov\/ecosystems<\/a> enables visualizations and mashups of spatial data related to ecosystems, natural resources and species.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Data include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>USDA Census of Agriculture data on production expenses, market value of products and operator characteristics<\/li>\n<li>Current and historical data on production, supply and distribution of agricultural products<\/li>\n<li>Data on climate-change-related risks such as storms, pests and drought<\/li>\n<li>Climate models that project potential future climate impacts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Beyond government data, the President\u2019s initiative also calls private-sector innovators to leverage open government data and other resources to build additional tools that will make the U.S. and global food systems more resilient. So far, this includes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2014\/07\/29\/fact-sheet-empowering-america-s-agricultural-sector-and-strengthening-fo\" target=\"_blank\">commitments<\/a> from Microsoft, IBM, Coca-Cola, Walmart and several other private-sector interests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Building food resilience through data-driven innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a nerve-wracking time to be a farmer.
