It\u2019s also a way to lower the methane intensity of the meat and dairy produced by livestock and improve health and livelihoods for people, which is particularly important for smallholder farmers in low-income countries.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\">Livestock farming contributes more than one-third of human-caused methane emissions, a powerful super-pollutant<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\"> responsible for much of the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\">additional<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\"> warming <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\">and extreme weather <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\">the world i<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\"> facing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\">. At the same time, animal agriculture both provides critical <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\">nutrition and supports the livelihoods of millions of families, benefits<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\"> that are<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\"> now at risk due to heatwaves, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\">droughts<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW8050077 BCX0\"> and other climate impacts.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Enhancing animal health, for example through improved disease management, is a way to address livestock methane emissions, while supporting rural livelihoods and nutritional needs. The scientific evidence for these links is growing.<\/p>\n<p>Farmers have long prioritized the health of their animals, and with additional investments and support from the public and private sectors, they can take the health of their animals even further.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why animal health matters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to causing suffering to animals, livestock diseases also cause significant production losses due to decreased productivity, decreased reproductive success, and even deaths of animals.<\/p>\n<p>These production losses are economically devastating to smallholder farmers and also have an invisible climate cost: if an animal becomes sick and dies, it still produces methane emissions without any of the benefits to nutrition and livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>In low and middle-income countries, optimizing productivity by investing in animal health is key to lowering the amount of methane emitted to produce a given amount of milk or meat, also known as methane intensity.<\/p>\n<p>These investments will also improve human health and livelihoods. They help to close nutrition gaps in areas where malnutrition is common (since healthier animals are more productive). They reduce zoonotic diseases (diseases that can spread from animals to humans), lowering the risk that humans will become ill. And they provide a more secure income from the sale of more milk and meat, allowing smallholder farmers to increase their quality of life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/\/Picture1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-15353 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/\/Picture1-1024x531.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/Picture1-1024x531.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/Picture1-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/Picture1-768x399.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/growingreturns\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/52\/files\/Picture1.png 1430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>New research highlights potential<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While farmers prioritize animal health and well-being to the best of their ability, opportunities remain to continue to improve animal health. The world\u2019s most vulnerable farmers still face many barriers to the adoption and implementation of best management and veterinary care practices.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW188024562 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188024562 BCX0\">In Africa, the demand for animal protein from cattle is expected to grow dramatically in the next few decades. Across the continent, population growth, increased income and urbanization will <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188024562 BCX0\">likely triple<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188024562 BCX0\"> meat consumption and double milk consumption by 2050. The current system is not built for success to support this <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188024562 BCX0\">due to<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188024562 BCX0\">production issues<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188024562 BCX0\">,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188024562 BCX0\">for example<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188024562 BCX0\">calf mortality reaching about 20% annually.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW188024562 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/sustainable-food-systems\/articles\/10.3389\/fsufs.2024.1390047\/full\">Newly published research<\/a> based on data from Tanzania and Kenya highlights the potential for animal health interventions to help solve these interconnected challenges. It shows that low-cost interventions can address climate change, food and nutritional security, and sustainable economic development.<\/p>\n<p>With this new research, it\u2019s become clear that we also need a roadmap to achieve animal health goals and understand how specific animal health interventions affect methane emissions.<\/p>\n<p>We have many technical solutions for improving animal health, including vaccination programs against infectious diseases, biosecurity measures, reproductive management and calf health support.
