Yet air pollution is choking cities and communities around the world \u2013 a staggering 9 in 10 people breathe unhealthy air.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">City leaders need to urgently identify and accelerate solutions across the world. That\u2019s why the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is launching a bold initiative \u2013 called <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cleanaircatalyst.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clean Air Catalyst<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 to help cities around the world reduce air pollution by advancing solutions that protect health, promote equitable prosperity and tackle the climate crisis.\u00a0 Through a global consortium of organizations led by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Clean Air Catalyst\u202fwill begin in two pilot cities: Indore, India, and Jakarta, Indonesia. <\/span>In Jakarta, WRI Indonesia is the implementing organization.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To mark the initiative\u2019s official launch, hundreds of people from around the world attended a virtual conversation on clean air, health and climate solutions with U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and USAID\u2019s Karl Fickenscher, as well as representatives from partners and the pilot cities. Here\u2019s what you need to know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>Improving health for vulnerable communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Air pollution is the greatest environmental threat to human health \u2013 causing more than 6 million premature deaths each year. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaid.gov\/who-we-are\/organization\/karl-fickenscher\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Karl Fickenscher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, representing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaid.gov\/who-we-are\/organization\/karl-fickenscher\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">USAID Bureau for Development, Democracy, and Innovation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, said, \u201cEighty percent of these deaths are in low and middle-income countries, and the current trends could result in a staggering 10 million deaths per year by 2050.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poor air quality affects nearly every organ in the body and increases risk of heart and lung diseases, including\u00a0 asthma. Children, older people and low-wealth communities often experience the worst outcomes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clean Air Catalyst will work with communities, as well as governments and the private sector, to develop local solutions that protect people\u2019s health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is a matter of public health, of equity and of environmental justice,\u201d said Senator Menendez. \u201cThe Clean Air Catalyst is a vital global flagship program that will build upon the knowledge and expertise of the United States to work with communities on the frontlines in developing and sustaining progress toward cleaner and healthier air.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/520365558?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>City partners<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Clean Air Catalyst program will initially work in Indore, India and Jakarta, Indonesia. Each of these cities suffers from poor air quality and has unique air pollution challenges.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indore has made great strides over the past several years to become a cleaner, more sustainable city. As Asad Warsi, the Sustainability Advisor for Indore Municipal Corporation, noted, \u201cNow is time to focus on improving air quality.\u201d He also stressed the importance of raising awareness as a starting point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yulia, Policy Manager in the Jakarta City Government, said a few years ago \u201cJakarta realized it had a real problem.\u201d But to solve the air pollution problem, she noted the importance of working together and getting citizens involved. \u201cThe government cannot do it alone \u2013 we are a city of collaborations. We want to move from city as provider to city as collaborator to achieve a common goal.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Understanding local sources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs scientists, a key pillar of our work is to focus on source awareness and source attribution,\u201d said Rebecca Garland, principal researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Pretoria, South Africa. \u201cWorking with local experts and officials we\u2019ll use a variety of approaches to develop air quality modeling and update the emissions inventory, which is a database of pollution sources.\u201d Garland is also a steering committee member of MAP-AQ, one of the Clean Air Catalyst partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The main drivers of pollution can be different depending on the area or even the time of year. Yulia said, \u201cWe have to know first what the sources are. Based on a study in Jakarta, we found a difference in air pollution sources between the wet and dry seasons. But transportation remains the primary sector for air pollution.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By pinpointing which activities are causing pollution and collaborating with multiple sectors across society, city leaders can identify solutions that lead to sustained progress on cleaner air and have the biggest health benefits.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Like in Jakarta, transportation is heavily contributing to air pollution in Indore. Warsi said the city is already taking action to address this. \u201cRecently in Indore we have moved to EVs in a big way \u2013 in public transport and private.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Climate benefits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many sources of air pollution \u2013 like burning fossil fuels \u2013 that damage our lungs are also damaging our climate. Climate change can also intensify the impacts of air pollution and vice versa. For example, extreme heat can cause an air mass to hover over the same area for several days, preventing air pollution from clearing out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe also know that many of the same pollutants that degrade air quality around the world also contribute to the existential threat of our time: climate change,\u201d said Senator Menendez.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By approaching solutions through the lens of both air quality and climate, tackling one problem can address the other.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe good news is that our actions can make a difference. Reducing air pollution could avoid an estimated .6 degrees Celsius of warming by 2050, slow the pace of arctic warming and help alleviate urban heat islands,\u201d Senator Menendez added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Local clean air solutions can improve public health and lessen climate change impacts, but action is still lagging. \u201cSolving this crisis will require global leadership and global action.
