\"chinafellowblogphoto\"<\/a>Energy efficiency is a goldmine, but not everyone has the time or resources to dig. That\u2019s why for the past seven years, over\u00a0three hundred organizations<\/a>\u00a0have turned to\u00a0EDF Climate Corps<\/a>\u00a0for hands-on help to cut costs and carbon pollution through better energy management. And every year, the program delivers results: this year\u2019s class of fellows found\u00a0$130 million in potential energy savings<\/a>\u00a0across 102 organizations.<\/p>\n

But this year we also saw something new. In addition to mining efficiencies in companies\u2019 internal operations, the fellows were sent farther afield \u2013 to suppliers\u2019 factories, distribution systems, and franchisee networks. What they discovered demonstrated there is plenty of gold to be found across entire value chains, if companies take the time to mine it.<\/p>\n

Here are three places where EDF Climate Corps fellows struck gold:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. China.<\/b>\u00a0Five multinational companies \u2013\u00a0Apple<\/a>,\u00a0Walmart<\/a>,\u00a0McDonald\u2019s<\/a>,\u00a0Cummins<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0Legrand<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 enlisted EDF Climate Corps to uncover efficiencies in their\u00a0Chinese operations<\/a>, with some focusing on suppliers\u2019 factories. The fellows\u2019 analysis highlighted how best practices in energy management could be scaled across hundreds of suppliers, saving tens of millions of dollars.<\/li>\n
  2. Distribution systems.\u00a0When moving goods, costs and carbon are highly correlated metrics: improve one and you will improve the other.\u00a0<\/b>The fellow at\u00a0Ocean Spray Cranberries<\/a>\u00a0identified a ten percent reduction in transportation emissions by shifting a portion of the company\u2019s shipments from trucks to rail.<\/li>\n
  3. Franchise networks.<\/b>\u00a0Dunkin\u2019 Brands brought on two fellows to reduce carbon emissions associated with franchise operations. One of them developed a\u00a0green construction program<\/a>\u00a0for new restaurants; the other set\u00a0emissions reduction targets<\/a>\u00a0for franchisee-owned baking facilities.[Tweet “Looking beyond the fence line for energy savings is critical to achieve cost savings & emission reductions http:\/\/ow.ly\/Cvo1P “]<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Looking beyond the fence line for energy savings is critical to achieve cost savings and emission reductions at scale. It\u2019s also evidence of an\u00a0evolution in corporate social responsibility<\/a>, from compliance to eco-efficiency to value chain optimization. Ultimately, where this continuum leads is to constructive engagement in public policy, as businesses help to shape the incentives and regulations needed to protect public health and the economy from the worst impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n

    The companies in EDF Climate Corps are at the forefront of this evolution. We look forward to continuing to help them dig for gold throughout their value chains, and reap the rewards in profits, innovation, and a healthier planet.<\/p>\n
