From Los Angeles to Atlanta, people aspire to live in clean, vibrant environments where their children can grow up healthy and safe.<\/p>\n<p>Women often play a unique role in grassroots organizing, and they gain followers by connecting people\u2019s aspiration for a more thriving community with the vision for a low-carbon, sustainable economy.<\/p>\n<p>I recently met two such activists who possess the passion, charisma, and savvy needed to make sure that their communities are not left out of the clean energy revolution. They work tirelessly to bring the benefits and opportunities of this rapidly growing economy to the places where they live.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Working for environmental justice in Los Angeles<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Veronica Padilla, executive director of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacoimabeautiful.org\/\">Pacoima Beautiful<\/a>, has dedicated her career to the nexus between urban planning and environmental justice in the industrial suburbs of Los Angeles\u2019s Northeast San Fernando Valley, one of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stateoftheair.org\/2014\/city-rankings\/most-polluted-cities.html\">most polluted regions of the state<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7369\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7369\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/pacoimabeautiful1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7369 \" alt=\"Veronica Padilla, center, with other Pacoima activitsts. \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/pacoimabeautiful1.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Veronica Padilla, center, with other Pacoima activitsts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Veronica\u2019s journey as an advocate for her community began with a move across town to study at University of California-Los Angeles, where she quickly observed a significant decline in \u201cgraffiti and allergies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through her studies and own personal experience, Veronica began to identify just how\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/04\/22\/why-latinos-are-disproportionately-affected-asthma-and-what-we-can-do\">disproportionately<\/a>\u00a0her community was affected by pollution because of how industrial facilities had been sited \u2013 near homes and schools.<\/p>\n<p>It was eye-opening, she notes, to see \u201cthe challenges facing my own community.\u201d Consequently, she changed her plans from going to medical school to focusing on urban planning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned that you could be vocal about these issues, but that my community wasn\u2019t as vocal as it could be,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Veronica continues Pacoima Beautiful&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacoimabeautiful.org\/about-us\/history\/\">legacy of female leadership<\/a>, working day in and day out to elevate the voice of her community for a healthier and more equitable Pacoima.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrating the power of partnerships, Pacoima Beautiful joined\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.laane.org\/whats-new\/2013\/10\/17\/repower-la\/\">RePower LA<\/a>\u00a0and other groups to help the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power transition away from coal and lead the city into a clean, more efficient future. It will help people save money on energy bills and create local green jobs.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mobilizing Atlanta&#8217;s African-American community<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Across the country, Felicia Davis has also been an inspiration in the environmental and social justice movements for more than a decade. As the director of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/buildinggreennetwork.org\/\">Building Green Initiative<\/a>\u00a0at Clark Atlanta University, she has put Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) firmly on the clean energy map.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7368\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7368\" style=\"width: 192px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/feliciadavis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7368  \" alt=\"Felicia Davis, a green force in Atlanta.\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/feliciadavis-300x300.jpg\" width=\"192\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/feliciadavis-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/feliciadavis-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/feliciadavis-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/feliciadavis.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Felicia Davis, a green force in Atlanta.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;One day I saw that the United Negro College Fund and HBCUs were having a meeting on sustainability,\u201d she recalls. &#8220;That sounded interesting to me so I just plopped myself down and started helping to plan, and basically created a job for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felicia has long been a defender of the environment. As an organizer for the Southern Organizing Committee for Economic and Social Justice in Atlanta in the early 2000s, she mobilized the African-American community against air pollution and coal plant siting in the South.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClimate change has real impacts,\u201d she says. \u201cI think I do as much as I can do to promote clean energy and ratchet down emissions. In the South, this is no small task.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Historically black universities barely registered on the Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges \u2013 not because they are not green, says Felicia, but because they don\u2019t usually apply.<\/p>\n<p>Working across 27 campuses to elevate their leadership in sustainability, Felicia and the Building Green Initiative created its own survey, proving that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/the-building-green-initiative-celebrates-earth-day-naming-ten-greenest-hbcus-256157481.html\">HCBUs can compete with the best of them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>More engagement by women brings change<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Much of the joy Felicia derives from her work comes from increasing student engagement, where gender plays an important role.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7366\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7366\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/Keep-Pacoima-Beautiful-mural.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7366\" alt=\"Keep-Pacoima-Beautiful-mural\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/Keep-Pacoima-Beautiful-mural-300x288.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/Keep-Pacoima-Beautiful-mural-300x288.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/06\/Keep-Pacoima-Beautiful-mural.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A section of a Keep Pacoima Beautiful mural that pictures solar cells behind a bright light bulb that doubles as the sun.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve reached a time where, in the absence of some enormous creative and innovative talent, our nation is in a decline that it might not emerge from\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy hope is that women will bring something different to the table, and that something different that we bring will be awakened and unleashed.
