As the Director of\u00a0Energy\u00a0and Environmental\u00a0Policy\u00a0at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.atr.org\/\">Americans for Tax Reform<\/a>, Prandoni may favor coal-fired power plants and dislike energy efficiency and renewables, but there\u2019s no doubt Ohio\u2019s clean energy standards are saving consumers money and bringing huge investments into the state.<\/p>\n<p>Prandoni supports\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2014\/04\/07\/ohios-clean-energy-standards-under-attack-again-by-alec\/\">S.B. 310<\/a>, which has already passed the Ohio Senate and is expected to enter the House within the next week, and promises to kill the state\u2019s renewable portfolio standards (RPS) and energy efficiency directives. If Prandoni has his way, and as he points out in his misinformed Forbes\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/chrisprandoni\/2014\/05\/14\/ohio-moves-to-rollback-green-energy-mandates\/?ss=business\">op-ed<\/a>, Ohio would be the first state in the nation to \u201cpare back\u201d its clean energy mandates, but this is not something Ohioans should be proud of.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Despite Prandoni\u2019s claim, the fact is Ohio utilities admit the clean energy standards are saving money. In filings to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO), the power companies\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/05\/OhioEE_Savingstodate-2.pdf\">admit<\/a>\u00a0energy efficiency programs alone have netted Ohio consumers more than $1 billion in savings to date, and will result in more than $4.1 billion in savings over the program\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio utility American Energy Power (AEP)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/05\/In-their-Own-Words-2.pdf\">argued<\/a>\u00a0energy efficiency \u201cis an important resource for the state of Ohio, AEP Ohio, and its customers, continuing to be important as future fuel and commodity prices remain volatile and environmental regulations become more stringent.\u201d\u00a0 Even FirstEnergy, the leading proponent of S.B. 310,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/05\/In-their-Own-Words-2.pdf\">admitted<\/a>\u00a0that for every $1 spent on energy efficiency programs, its customers save over $2.<\/p>\n<div id=\"article_container_0_loge\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/7175\/fdc.forbes\/article-new_4__container__\">The standards, in fact, are advancing competition and providing consumers with choices about what forms of energy they can purchase. What Prandoni and S.B. 310 advocates are doing is strangling that competition and choice.They also are hurting Ohio consumers. According to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohiomfg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013-11-22_lb_energy_deeps_nov_13_final.pdf\">calculations<\/a>\u00a0by professors at Ohio State University (OSU), the proposed scuttling of the state\u2019s clean energy laws would force the average Ohio family to pay over $500 more on their electricity charges, and the average business would pay an additional $3,000 annually.<\/p>\n<p>The passage of S.B. 310, moreover, would stall the state\u2019s economic development. OSU also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohiomfg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013-11-22_lb_energy_deeps_nov_13_final.pdf\">found<\/a>\u00a0that existing clean energy laws have helped 400 companies grow and employ 25,000 Ohioans. The standards have attracted more than a billion dollars of private-sector investment, helping make the Buckeye State the nation\u2019s leader in wind-related manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Governor John Kasich has taken great pride in his clean energy leadership. The website\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jobs-ohio.com\/\">JobsOhio<\/a>, the governor\u2019s privatized economic development agent, boasts: \u201cOhio ranks No. 1 in the nation for renewable and advanced energy, bringing in more renewable energy facilities than any other state.\u201d It further declares, \u201cOhio is committed to leading the world to energy independence with advanced energy innovation, groundbreaking manufacturing processes and low-cost deployment of these assets to fulfill current and future demand for alternative energy solutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The standards enjoy support from many of the state\u2019s leading companies \u2013 including Honda,\u00a0Johnson Controls,\u00a0Schneider Electric\u00a0,\u00a0Whirlpool, United Technologies, and Owens Corning \u2013 who are speaking out against S.B. 310. Employing more than 30,000 workers, the firms\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/05\/Ohio-Business-Letter-Opposing-SB-310-4-8-2014.pdf\">stated<\/a>, \u201cWe believe that policies promoting efficiency should continue to be a part of Ohio\u2019s plan to attract economic investment and encourage growth.\u201d S.B. 310, they said, \u201cwould negatively impact programs local utilities run to trim energy consumption, and help stabilize the state\u2019s electricity grid and prices.\u201d The clean energy standards, the companies argued, \u201cprovide business prospects and jobs for contractors across the Buckeye State,\u201d and such policies are \u201ca low-cost strategy for keeping utility costs under control and providing protection against price volatility, which enhances competitiveness for our companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Even the Ohio Manufacturers Association\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/05\/OMA-testimony-on-310.pdf\">supports<\/a>\u00a0the clean energy standards, arguing that the falling prices of wind energy and solar collectors, along with energy efficiency, make clean power the most cost-effective way to meet the state\u2019s energy needs.<\/p>\n<p>The religious and evangelical communities also have been supportive. A recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/05\/Catholic-Conference-letter.pdf\">letter<\/a>\u00a0from all Ohio Bishops, stated, \u201cWe ask you to prayerfully consider if it would be more prudent for the\u00a0sake of environmental stewardship to maintain our current policies and not freeze these standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This broad coalition knows the facts \u2013 Ohio\u2019s clean energy standards are working and S.B. 310 would hurt the state\u2019s businesses, workers, and consumers.<\/p>\n<p><em>This commentary originally appeared on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/edfenergyexchange\/2014\/05\/15\/fact-clean-energy-is-working-in-ohio\/\">Forbes<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chris Prandoni certainly is welcome to his own\u00a0opinions, but not his own facts.
