From the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sd27.senate.ca.gov\/biography\">author<\/a>\u00a0of the country\u2019s leading clean car standards, to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/time100.time.com\/2013\/04\/18\/time-100\/slide\/mary-nichols\/\">top administrator<\/a>\u00a0of the most\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/climate\/california-climate-action\">ambitious climate policy in the nation<\/a>\u00a0(California\u2019s AB32), to the scientists and entrepreneurs developing and deploying the advanced technologies driving the nation\u2019s low-carbon economy, women are taking charge of the clean energy sector like never before.<\/p>\n<p>Women have always been on the frontlines of our country\u2019s toughest environmental challenges \u2014 including Rachel Carson, who galvanized the country with her expos\u00e9 of pesticides in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/11\/either-change-system-or-risk-another-silent-spring\"><em>Silent Spring<\/em><\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.epa.gov\/ej\/2014\/02\/mama-johnson\/\">Hazel Johnson<\/a>, the \u2018Mother of the Environmental Justice Movement,\u2019 who fought against toxic dumping in her own Southeast Chicago community.<\/p>\n<p>But women have\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0always dominated the energy sector.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/03\/gwen_0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6640\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/03\/gwen_0.jpg\" alt=\"gwen_0\" width=\"387\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/03\/gwen_0.jpg 387w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2014\/03\/gwen_0-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/><\/a>Throughout the Industrial Revolution, the story of energy has traditionally been written by innovative men like Thomas Edison and George Mitchell, who invented and invested in the technologies and companies that made oil, coal, and natural gas the dominant fuels of the 20th\u00a0century. Today, women are rewriting the history books, spearheading a new era of leadership in the clean energy economy.<\/p>\n<p>One might argue that women\u2019s rise in the clean energy sector shares similarities with the industry\u2019s own evolution. By\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/07\/clean-energy-technology-booming-five-reasons-it\">proving competitive<\/a>\u00a0in the marketplace, clean energy over the last few decades has been successfully digging out of the pigeonhole that it is niche, small-scale, and, well, the underdog. Bucking the status quo, women are beginning to penetrate clean-energy industries at a growing rate\u2014creating start-ups, climbing the ranks in large cleantech companies, and investing in the technologies of the future. Renewable energy has been the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.gov\/wb\/media\/AltEnergy_Teleconffactsheet.pdf\">fastest growing segment<\/a>\u00a0of the power industry at the same time that women-owned businesses are growing at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.gov\/wb\/media\/Tconf_GrWomen_factsheet.pdf\">twice the national average<\/a>, and we are seeing these\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grist.org\/cleantech\/2011-07-21-dudefest-no-more-women-are-infiltrating-cleantech\/\">trends converge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, female leadership extends far beyond the boardroom. Women are also championing forward-thinking climate and energy policies as elected leaders, making critical technological breakthroughs in the labs and hitting the pavement to rally their communities in demanding clean air and smart, livable cities.<\/p>\n<p>Curbing climate change and transitioning to a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/climate\/cleanenergy\">clean energy economy<\/a>\u00a0is about more than just reducing carbon emissions; it\u2019s about investing in a new and more vibrant economic future for us all. In honor of Women\u2019s History Month, I am embarking on a journey to explore\u00a0<em>Women in Power<\/em>, recognizing some of today\u2019s bold female leaders ushering in a prosperous, low-carbon economy and shattering the glass ceiling on the way.
