{"id":4185,"date":"2013-05-21T19:50:38","date_gmt":"2013-05-21T19:50:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/?p=4185"},"modified":"2015-03-16T15:35:04","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T20:35:04","slug":"heat-without-fire-geothermal-for-a-cleaner-sustainable-future-in-new-york-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2013\/05\/21\/heat-without-fire-geothermal-for-a-cleaner-sustainable-future-in-new-york-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Heat Without Fire: Geothermal For A Cleaner, Sustainable Future In New York City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By: Mark\u00a0Franks,\u00a0EDF Energy Research Intern<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4186\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4186\" style=\"width: 181px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2013\/05\/IB-Geothermal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4186 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2013\/05\/IB-Geothermal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4186\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Achrnews.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hurricane Sandy proved that New York City\u2019s energy system is <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2013\/01\/10\/weathering-the-storm-next-time-gov-cuomos-nys-2100-panel-offers-smart-plan-to-keep-the-lights-on-emissions-down\/\">not up to the challenges<\/a> of the present day.\u00a0 And, as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2013\/04\/04\/new-york-citys-air-is-well-on-its-way-to-becoming-cleaner-than-ever\/\">we have highlighted before<\/a>, the city faces some major challenges to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyccleanheat.org\/\">reducing dangerous air pollution<\/a> caused by heavy heating fuels.\u00a0 One promising solution seeking to significantly reduce NYC\u2019s carbon footprint, improve air quality, and increase <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/07\/business\/geothermal-energy-advocates-hope-systems-get-a-second-look.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0\">grid resiliency<\/a> during storms is geothermal heat pumps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nepis.epa.gov\/Exe\/ZyNET.exe\/9100NXOW.TXT?ZyActionD=ZyDocument&amp;Client=EPA&amp;Index=1991+Thru+1994&amp;File=D%3A%5CZYFILES%5CINDEX+DATA%5C91THRU94%5CTXT%5C00000024%5C9100NXOW.TXT&amp;User=anonymous&amp;Password=anonymous&amp;Display=hpfrw&amp;MaximumPages=5&amp;Query=fname%3D%229100NXOW.TXT%22\">The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has called<\/a> ground source heat pumps the \u201cmost energy-efficient, environmentally clean, and cost-effective space conditioning systems available.\u201d\u00a0 Geothermal heat pumps or exchangers, also known as geo-exchange, require no fossil-fuel burning on-site, use 70 percent of their energy from Earth\u2019s renewable sources and are, on average, <a href=\"http:\/\/nepis.epa.gov\/Exe\/ZyNET.exe\/9100NXOW.TXT?ZyActionD=ZyDocument&amp;Client=EPA&amp;Index=1991+Thru+1994&amp;File=D%3A%5CZYFILES%5CINDEX+DATA%5C91THRU94%5CTXT%5C00000024%5C9100NXOW.TXT&amp;User=anonymous&amp;Password=anonymous&amp;Display=hpfrw&amp;MaximumPages=5&amp;Query=fname%3D%229100NXOW.TXT%22\">nearly 50 percent more efficient<\/a> than gas furnaces.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, I had the honor of watching NYC Mayor Bloomberg <a href=\"http:\/\/www.renewableenergyworld.com\/rea\/news\/article\/2013\/04\/nyc-mayor-signs-legislation-to-study-geothermal-feasibility\">sign a bill<\/a> tasking the New York City Office of Long-Term Planning &amp; Sustainability to study geothermal energy resources and the feasibility of city-wide adoption of geothermal heating and cooling. \u00a0As Mayor Bloomberg\u2019s sustainability leadership \u2013 in an official capacity at least \u2013 comes to an end, his plans to ensure that the city\u2019s mission to find sustainable, cost-effective solutions to combat air pollution are well underway.\u00a0 Though the geothermal heating and cooling bill is very important, it is only one aspect of the Mayor\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/planyc2030\/html\/home\/home.shtml\">larger PlaNYC effort<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During his speech, Mayor Bloomberg remarked, \u201cSo what is geothermal anyway? I am having it installed in the new place I just bought and I know it works and how much it costs but nothing else.\u201d\u00a0 His words sum up the greatest challenge for geo-exchange yet \u2013 lack of awareness. \u00a0Geo-exchange technology needs our help to move it out of its prolonged infancy and into the mainstream.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2013\/05\/Bloomberg-Signing-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-4187\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2013\/05\/Bloomberg-Signing-2-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2013\/05\/Bloomberg-Signing-2-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2013\/05\/Bloomberg-Signing-2.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most common misconception holding it back is that geothermal energy will generate electricity, which is only true if you live atop a volcano. Here, in New York, Earth\u2019s sub-surface temperature isn\u2019t quite hot enough to produce electricity.
