This series will demonstrate that cost-effective, clean energy solutions are available now and imperative to lowering our dependence on fossil fuels.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><em>Find more information on this featured innovation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/energy\/innovation\/community-owned-utility-innovation\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Want to build CPS Energy\u2019s new massive solar project in San Antonio?\u00a0 Pack your bags.\u00a0 You may have to move to the Alamo city and hire a few hundred local employees.<\/p>\n<p>With more than $2.3 billion in annual revenue and $10 billion in total assets,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpsenergy.com\/About_CPS_Energy\/Who_We_Are\/New_Energy_Economy\/index.asp\">CPS Energy<\/a>\u00a0(CPS) is the largest municipally-owned electric and gas utility in the country, providing service to almost 750,000 customers in and around San Antonio, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>CPS\u2019s strategic goals and decisions are among the most progressive in the country.\u00a0 It is shooting for 20 percent renewable energy generation capacity by 2020 and has plans to mothball one of its 1970s-era coal plants in 2018, 15 years earlier than expected. But beyond carbon reduction targets and renewable energy commitments, CPS is using a very old-fashioned tool to spur energy innovation deep in the heart of Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The tool? LEVERAGE. With a $2 billion annual operating budget and the highest credit rating in the industry, CPS has dollars to spend on innovative technologies, and the company is leveraging its renewable energy and clean technology dollars to bolster local job growth, protect the environment and help its customers use energy more wisely. CPS calls it the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpsenergy.com\/About_CPS_Energy\/Who_We_Are\/New_Energy_Economy\/index.asp\">New Energy Economy<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have the opportunity to leverage our buying power to benefit our community, by requiring our partners to add more value to San Antonio,\u201d said Doyle Beneby, President &amp; CEO of CPS Energy. \u201cThat value comes in the form of jobs for our community by establishing headquarters and adding manufacturing. It also comes in the form of investment in San Antonio\u2019s educational institutions.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In July 2012, CPS inked a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with a consortium led by OCI Solar. CPS will buy 400 megawatts of energy from multiple solar installations built throughout the state of Texas.\u00a0 In return, OCI Solar will invest $1 billion in a manufacturing facility in San Antonio, resulting in more than 800 jobs and more than $700 million in annual economic activity.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3221\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3221\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2012\/09\/CPS-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3221\" title=\"CPS 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2012\/09\/CPS-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2012\/09\/CPS-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2012\/09\/CPS-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2012\/09\/CPS-1.jpg 1202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CPS Energy employees inspect LED street lights before installation on the streets of San Antonio. (Credit: CPS Energy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In 2011, North Carolina-based Consert relocated its headquarters to San Antonio as a result of another agreement with CPS. The technology company is creating a \u201cvirtual peak power plant\u201d through a novel home area network solution that captures small amounts of energy from thousands of homes across CPS\u2019s service area during peak demand hours. Consert\u2019s service is expected to reduce up to 250 MW of peak demand once the utility reaches its goal of 140,000 installations, easing the load on CPS\u2019s system and reducing the amount of power it needs to generate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve taken our approach to fuel diversity one step farther,\u201d said Beneby, \u201cby incorporating PPAs for renewable energy, focusing on demand response measures like home area networks, and investing in a new, efficient gas plant that relies on a resource that is plentiful in Texas. Our solution may not work for everyone, but we\u2019ve customized an approach we believe works for our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>The Centennial Solar Farms in San Antonio provide 19.8 MW of renewable power to CPS Energy customers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the last year alone, CPS estimates that it has leveraged already-committed expenses into more than 1,000 local jobs and nearly $1 billion in economic impact.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being important players in reducing our carbon footprint, energy providers are among the largest businesses and employers in their communities. \u00a0Community-owned utilities like CPS Energy are in prime positions to affect not just their own activity, but also that of the broader economy.
