How it is produced, managed and used all matter. line-height: 16.2pt;\"><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">One way of cleaning up production is to capture and sequester the resulting carbon dioxide. But even if this is successfully done<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">and there are many challenges to solve<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">producers must also take responsibility for methane emissions upstream on the gas supply chain. But even this requires a lot of energy, and without safeguards to ensure the electricity is carbon free, it could take us backward<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">by diverting wind, solar and other zero-carbon resources and increasing generation from fossil fuels.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"xs3\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6.0pt; line-height: 16.2pt;\"><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">Then there is the hydrogen molecule itself. The smallest element on the periodic table, it\u2019s so tiny that half a million hydrogen molecules can sit side-by-side in the width of a human hair. That makes hydrogen highly prone to escape. When it does, scientists say it can trap<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs43247-022-00626-z&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cswofford%40edf.org%7C4dde0651b4b843f6f7e108dc235e8281%7Cfe4574edbcfd4bf0bde843713c3f434f%7C0%7C0%7C638424136054319784%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=34iXp0Dq8ZuHnhtl%2Fzn8%2FhfIIINlugyI9R%2FcCkMBELI%3D&amp;reserved=0\"><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt; color: blue;\">nearly 40 times<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">more heat than CO2 over the first 20 years in the atmosphere.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"xs7\" style=\"margin-bottom: 9.0pt; line-height: 16.2pt;\"><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">There are several key steps the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">Biden<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">administration can take to help make sure the hydrogen economy we\u2019re investing in delivers on its climate promise.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"xs7\" style=\"margin-bottom: 9.0pt; line-height: 16.2pt;\"><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">The IRA clean hydrogen tax credits are an opportunity to get hydrogen production right<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">but we shouldn\u2019t subsidize hydrogen that is clean in name only. Treasury Secretary<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">Janet<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">Yellen\u2019s team should require hydrogen powered by electricity to abide by three pillars:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">Rely on new clean power, which is located in the same region and running during the same hours as hydrogen production. In other words, for hydrogen to be climate-friendly it needs to be produced with clean power that\u2019s\u00a0<i>new, near and now.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"xs7\" style=\"margin-bottom: 9.0pt; line-height: 16.2pt;\"><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">Many renewable energy and hydrogen companies support this approach as being compatible with industry scale-up, and experience in Europe has already demonstrated that the three pillars will support<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xapple-converted-space\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"xbumpedfont15\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">industry growth.
