According to the report by Dunsky Energy + Climate Advisors, Canada\u2019s upstream oil and gas companies can eliminate 75% of their methane emissions at an average cost of about $11 per tonne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/\/Canada-Methane-Cost-Curve.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22587\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/\/Canada-Methane-Cost-Curve.png\" alt=\"Marginal Cost &amp; Potential of Methane Abatement Measures at Gas Sites\" width=\"637\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/Canada-Methane-Cost-Curve.png 637w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/Canada-Methane-Cost-Curve-300x195.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 637px) 100vw, 637px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of the biggest bargains that exists when it comes to climate solutions. For example, were oil and gas companies subject to Canada\u2019s entire carbon price, they would need to pay $65 per tonne of carbon pollution they create. By 2030, this figure will rise to $170 per tonne. Meanwhile, technologies that can directly capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere are estimated to cost<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/direct-air-capture-2022\/executive-summary\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between $125 and $335 USD per tonne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an astronomical figure compared to methane abatement.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>Why methane now?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methane is an extremely potent greenhouse gas that\u2019s responsible for over a quarter of current global warming. It is intensifying wildfires, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ac4f10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melting Arctic summer sea ice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/article\/methane-not-your-grandparents-climate-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating more intense storms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalcleanair.org\/methane-and-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deteriorating air quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in 2021, Canada joined over a hundred other countries which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalmethanepledge.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pledged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help reduce global methane emissions 30% by 2030. The government then went even further, pledging to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/policies\/17015-faster-and-further-canadas-methane-strategy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce 75% of methane emissions from the oil and gas sector<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over that same period. This assessment confirms that not only is that goal achievable, but it\u2019s also extremely affordable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s because methane essentially is natural gas. When it leaks out of pipes, tanks and other equipment, it not only generates climate pollution, it also leads to a lot of energy waste. The oil and gas sector is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/data-and-statistics\/data-tools\/methane-tracker\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largest source of methane pollution in Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and according to the report, the methane gas that could be saved, rather than emitted, is enough to meet the annual gas needs of more than 750,000 Canadian homes \u2013 roughly equal to all the households in Montreal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/771355640?h=83de570ba3\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This new assessment looked at the 33 of the most common methane solutions currently in practice, many of them based on some of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/services\/environment\/weather\/climatechange\/climate-plan\/reducing-methane-emissions\/proposed-regulatory-framework-2030-target.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abatement measures provided in Canada\u2019s methane framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released last fall. Nearly every time researchers measure methane from the oil and gas industry, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2023\/02\/21\/new-study-underscores-need-for-better-methane-measurement-and-strong-regulations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we consistently find that methane emissions are significantly higher than what gets reported to the federal government<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Stronger standards and better enforcement will be essential to achieving the real reductions that matter for the climate.
