This electric truck revolution is being spurred by growing private sector investment, rapidly maturing technology and clear government leadership. As a result, these trucks are moving from the showroom floor to highways and local streets across North America.<\/p>\n<p>Among the many signs of progress are:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0There are over <a href=\"https:\/\/calstart.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ZIO-ZETs-Report_Updated-Final-II.pdf\">145 different zero-emission truck models<\/a> available today. That\u2019s a 625% increase since 2019.<\/li>\n<li>Over <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1l0m2Do1mjSemrb_DT40YNGou4o2m2Ee-KLSvHC-5vAc\/edit#gid=2049738669\">170 truck fleets<\/a> are operating or have orders in place for zero-emission trucks, according to EDF analysis. This is in addition to the scores of electric transit and school bus fleets across America.<\/li>\n<li>Truck manufacturers are investing billions to meet the growing demand for zero-emission vehicles. In the most recent example, truck engine maker Cummins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/engine-maker-cummins-buy-meritor-26-bln-electric-parts-push-2022-02-22\/\">announced<\/a> it would acquire Meritor for a price tag of $2.58 billion to beef up its electric and hybrid vehicle parts offerings. While Ford recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/02\/ford-splits-evs-and-legacy-autos-into-separate-units.html\">announced<\/a> plans to split the company\u2019s internal combustion and EV businesses into separate entities. As the biggest manufacturer of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles in the country, Ford\u2019s move signals to investors and buyers that the company is \u201cgoing on all in\u201d on EVs, as Ford CEO Jim Farley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/02\/ford-splits-evs-and-legacy-autos-into-separate-units.html\">explained<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This progress is great news for people and the planet. Despite making up only about 4% of vehicles on the road, the buses, work trucks and tractor trailers that distribute people and goods are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-03\/HD_ZEV_White_Paper.pdf\">largest contributor<\/a> among all highway vehicles to nitrogen oxide emissions and health harming fine particulates. Trucks are also a leading source of climate pollution in the U.S.<\/p>\n<span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblogs.edf.org%2Fenergyexchange%2F2022%2F03%2F07%2Fthis-week-all-eyes-are-on-zero-emission-trucks-its-time-for-policymakers-to-go-bold%2F&#038;text=This%20week%2C%20all%20eyes%20are%20on%20zero-emission%20trucks.%20It%E2%80%99s%20time%20for%20policymakers%20to%20go%20bold.&#038;via=EDFEnergyEx&#038;related=EDFEnergyEx' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This week, all eyes are on zero-emission trucks. It\u2019s time for policymakers to go bold. <\/a><\/span><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblogs.edf.org%2Fenergyexchange%2F2022%2F03%2F07%2Fthis-week-all-eyes-are-on-zero-emission-trucks-its-time-for-policymakers-to-go-bold%2F&#038;text=This%20week%2C%20all%20eyes%20are%20on%20zero-emission%20trucks.%20It%E2%80%99s%20time%20for%20policymakers%20to%20go%20bold.&#038;via=EDFEnergyEx&#038;related=EDFEnergyEx' target='_blank' class='bctt-ctt-btn'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Share on X<\/a><\/span>\n<p>The smog-forming NOx and fine particulate pollution from trucks and buses cause adverse health impacts in utero, in infants and children, and in adults and the elderly \u2013 with those who live closest to our nation\u2019s roads and highways, ports, distribution centers, freight depots and other sources of truck pollution facing the greatest harm. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33868452\/\">20,000 Americans die prematurely every year<\/a> because of pollution from highway vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>While the momentum toward a zero-emission future is gaining speed, we still have a long way to go \u2014 and we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/media\/new-ipcc-report-shows-need-transition-clean-energy-global-economy\">don\u2019t have time to waste<\/a>. To accelerate this transition and ensure we are maximizing the health, climate and economic benefits of the EV revolution, we need:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Long-term emission standards for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles:<\/strong> To provide market certainty for future investments in zero-emission trucks, we need rigorous, long-term multi-pollutant emission standards that achieve 100% sales of new zero-emission trucks and buses. The Environmental Protection Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.edf.org%2Fmedia%2Fepa-proposes-pollution-standards-freight-trucks-and-buses&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cefick%40edf.org%7C6e9c2469054344464f9708da005cef3f%7Cfe4574edbcfd4bf0bde843713c3f434f%7C0%7C0%7C637822696454849041%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&amp;sdata=HDrL0%2Fouq86v3TqBOCGfImdJysBEhDdrj%2F93owAVK%2FQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\">today proposed<\/a> new standards for harmful air pollution from freight trucks and buses starting with model year 2027. These new standards do not yet ensure levels of zero-emission vehicle deployment that are feasible and needed, and therefore must be strengthened. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/epa-should-adopt-rigorous-pollution-standards-help-ensure-adoption-zero-emission-trucks-buses\">recent EDF study<\/a> found that zero-emitting solutions are available and can help save truckers and fleets money. It adds to the large body of evidence documenting the feasibility of deploying zero-emitting solutions \u2014 including actions by states across the country and leading fleets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clean, affordable charging infrastructure:<\/strong> Complexities around charging still remain a significant barrier to wide-scale EV adoption, and this is especially true for trucks. The recently passed Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act contains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/10\/business\/electric-vehicle-chargers-biden.html\">$5 billion for charging infrastructure<\/a>. States need to leverage this investment and develop infrastructure programs that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2022\/02\/15\/solving-the-ev-charging-challenge-a-how-to-guide-for-regulators\/\">reflect the unique needs of electric trucks<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>An equity-centered approach to deployment:<\/strong> Communities of color and disadvantaged populations make up a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2020\/09\/02\/our-new-report-shows-the-importance-of-accelerating-to-100-clean-vehicles\/\">higher percentage<\/a> of people living near highways, distribution centers and ports, meaning they shoulder the greatest health burden from vehicle pollution. Therefore, deployment of charging stations and zero-emission trucks should be prioritized in low-income, pollution-burdened communities first, where the air quality benefits of zero-emission technologies are needed most.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Electric trucks are ready to play an important role in the nation\u2019s transition to a zero-emission future. At this week\u2019s conferences, we\u2019ll see this on full display via new product launches, corporate commitments and dynamic discussions among industry leaders.
