This is the main finding of a new EDF analysis of public announcements and known deployments of leading fleets. EDF found nearly 500 existing electric deployments and pledges to deploy nearly 300 times more vehicles as additional models become available.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis, which will be updated periodically to reflect new announcements and pledges, is available via a sortable <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1l0m2Do1mjSemrb_DT40YNGou4o2m2Ee-KLSvHC-5vAc\/edit#gid=2049738669\">Google Sheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Some notable deployments include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ngtnews.com\/municipal-fleet-takes-delivery-of-first-peterbilt-medium-duty-electric-truck\">Anchorage Department of Solid Waste Services<\/a> \u2014 which recently took custody of a Peterbilt Model 220EV.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/jm-sanitation-deploys-byd-amrep-electric-refuse-trucks-301237887.html\">J&amp;M Sanitation<\/a> \u2014 which is running two BYD 8R sanitation trucks in Kuna, Idaho.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruan.com\/resources\/blog\/ruan-purchases-fully-electric-terminal-truck\">Ruan<\/a> \u2014 which is running a terminal tractor in Otsego, MN.<\/li>\n<li>Aramark, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motivps.com\/aramark-hits-275000-ev-miles\/\">operating 31 electric walk-in vans powered by Motiv<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Dependable Highway Express, which is running two Volvo VNR trucks and has ordered another 10 to operate in Ontario, CA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblogs.edf.org%2Fenergyexchange%2F2021%2F07%2F28%2Fedf-analysis-finds-american-fleets-are-embracing-electric-trucks%2F&#038;text=EDF%20analysis%20finds%20American%20fleets%20are%20embracing%20electric%20trucks&#038;via=EDFEnergyEx&#038;related=EDFEnergyEx' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EDF analysis finds American fleets are embracing electric trucks <\/a><\/span><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblogs.edf.org%2Fenergyexchange%2F2021%2F07%2F28%2Fedf-analysis-finds-american-fleets-are-embracing-electric-trucks%2F&#038;text=EDF%20analysis%20finds%20American%20fleets%20are%20embracing%20electric%20trucks&#038;via=EDFEnergyEx&#038;related=EDFEnergyEx' target='_blank' class='bctt-ctt-btn'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Share on X<\/a><\/span>\n<p>Many fleets are demonstrating their strong interest in zero-emission transportation with large procurement commitments. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Amazon \u2014which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/rivian-real-amazon-plans-100000-vehicle-order\">ordered more than 100,000 electric delivery trucks<\/a> from Rivian.<\/li>\n<li>FedEx \u2014 which has reserved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialappeal.com\/story\/money\/industries\/logistics\/2021\/01\/12\/general-motors-brightdrop-fedex-express-electric-vehicles\/6637138002\/\">500 BrightDrop cargo vans<\/a>. Fleet interest in these vehicles has been high, as evidenced by GM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gmauthority.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/gm-accelerates-production-timeline-for-brightdrop-ev600-amid-high-demand\/\">accelerated<\/a> production timeline for these vehicles and fleet management company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/merchants-fleet-orders-12600-gm-brightdrop-electric-vans\">Merchant Fleet<\/a> ordering 12,600 vans in anticipation of fleet interest.<\/li>\n<li>New Legend Inc. \u2014 a western regional freight hauler, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetequipmentmag.com\/electric-truck-investment\/\">ordered 50 Freightliner eCascadias<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>ConEd \u2014 which will be running a Lion Electric bucket truck in New York City in 2022.<\/li>\n<li>UPS \u2014 which is converting up to <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2017\/11\/10\/ups-converting-battery-electric-delivery-trucks-new-york\/\">1,500 delivery trucks in New York<\/a> to electric and is buying <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2018\/06\/15\/ups-fleet-1000-electric-vans-workhorse\/\">1,000 electric vans from Workhorse<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-pepsico-tesla-orders\/pepsico-makes-biggest-public-pre-order-of-tesla-semis-100-trucks-idUSKBN1E61FB\">PepsiCo<\/a> \u2014 which is operating<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/emissions-efficiency\/article\/21704383\/fritolay-takes-delivery-of-first-220ev-from-peterbilt\"> 6 Peterbilt 220 EVs<\/a>, has ordered 100 electric semi trucks from Tesla, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/03\/25\/15-tesla-semi-electric-trucks-delivered-pepsico-2021\/\">15 of which are expected to be delivered in 2021<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Quality Custom Distribution \u2014 a national foodservice logistics supplier, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/emissions-efficiency\/press-release\/21161426\/volvo-trucks-lands-largest-vnr-electric-order\">has ordered 14 Volvo electric VNR freight trucks.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Companies are also signaling their future direction through corporate sustainability strategies and commitments. As part of its analysis, EDF examined the fleet commitments of companies with the largest fleets and found that 17 have committed to transition all or significant parts of their fleet to electric vehicles. An additional 14 companies have set targets to cut emissions at least 50% by 2035.<\/p>\n<p>Key examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2020\/09\/22\/walmart-commits-to-100-zero-emission-trucks-by-2040-signaling-electric-is-the-future\/\">Walmart<\/a> is targeting zero global operational emissions by 2040. This includes electrifying its vehicles (including long-haul trucks) by 2040.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2021\/03\/03\/with-its-new-zero-emission-commitment-fedex-raises-the-bar-on-climate-leadership\/\">FedEx<\/a> has pledged a 100% electric pick-up and delivery fleet and carbon-neutral operations by 2040.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pepsico.com\/news\/press-release\/pepsico-doubles-down-on-climate-goal-and-pledges-net-zero-emissions-by-204001142021\">PepsiCo<\/a> plans to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions across its direct operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 75% and its indirect value chain (Scope 3) by 40% by 2030. In addition, the company has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Interest in electric trucks has become a mainstream focus within the trucking industry. Leading fleets recognize that zero-emission vehicles, particularly electric vehicles, are increasingly able to perform the jobs needed and are likely to offer lower total costs within a few years.
