{"id":2115,"date":"2012-01-05T19:08:27","date_gmt":"2012-01-05T19:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/?p=2115"},"modified":"2012-04-04T19:09:47","modified_gmt":"2012-04-04T19:09:47","slug":"caught-on-film-watch-how-att-qts-new-york-city-housing-authority-saved-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2012\/01\/05\/caught-on-film-watch-how-att-qts-new-york-city-housing-authority-saved-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"Caught On Film: Watch How AT&amp;T, QTS &amp; New York City Housing Authority Saved Energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This commentary was originally posted <em><em>on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/innovation\/\">EDF Business Blog<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It sounds so simple:\u00a0 saving energy saves money. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/Client_Service\/Electric_Power_and_Natural_Gas\/Latest_thinking\/Unlocking_energy_efficiency_in_the_US_economy\">McKinsey &amp; Company<\/a> estimates that the U.S. could reduce its annual energy consumption 23 percent through efficiency measures, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by over a gigaton and saving both companies and consumers over a trillion dollars.<\/p>\n<p>So why do we as a nation still waste so much energy?\u00a0 And how do we stop? The fact is organizations face many barriers to implementing energy-saving projects, which have nothing to do with technology and everything to do with the way people make decisions.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most common challenges is the lack of information.\u00a0 So in the holiday spirit of sharing, we worked with three of our <a href=\"http:\/\/edfclimatecorps.org\/2011-climate-corps-organizations\">EDF Climate Corps hosts<\/a> to tell the story of how they are capturing their piece of that trillion-dollar opportunity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/edfclimatecorps.org\/att-and-edf-energy-efficiency-cooling-systems\">AT&amp;T<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/edfclimatecorps.org\/qts-and-edf-energy-efficiency-datacenters\">QTS<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/edfclimatecorps.org\/new-york-city-housing-authority-and-edf-energy-savings-wireless-energy-modules\">New York City Housing Authority<\/a> (NYCHA) welcomed EDF\u2019s cameras into their facilities and spoke openly about the energy efficiency projects they\u2019ve got in the works. Together, we compiled a series of videos spotlighting successful projects in lighting, cooling, heating and data centers.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick rundown of featured projects along with a link to each video:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edfclimatecorps.org\/att-and-edf-energy-efficiency-cooling-systems\"><strong>AT&amp;T<\/strong><\/a><\/span> worked with EDF Climate Corps to uncover potential <strong>savings of up to 50 percent associated with cooling costs<\/strong> at\u00a0250 of AT&amp;T\u2019s facilities by using a technique called \u201ceconomizer mode\u201d \u2013 a process in which cool external air replaces the need for mechanically chilled air during cool months.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/edfclimatecorps.org\/att-and-edf-energy-efficiency-lighting-systems\">AT&amp;T<\/a><\/strong> also worked with EDF Climate Corps to find ways to <strong>cut its lighting energy use by 80 percent. <\/strong>A project that is now being rolled out across its 250 largest central offices.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edfclimatecorps.org\/qts-and-edf-energy-efficiency-datacenters\"><strong>Data center provider<\/strong> <strong>QTS<\/strong><\/a><\/span> worked with EDF Climate Corps to optimize <strong>efficiency in its LEED Gold datacenter and reduce annual costs by $4 million.<\/strong> The company plans to invest $10 million to implement these projects.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edfclimatecorps.org\/new-york-city-housing-authority-and-edf-energy-savings-wireless-energy-modules\"><strong>New York City Housing Authority<\/strong><\/a><\/span> worked with EDF Climate Corps to analyze the energy savings potential of installing Wireless Energy Modules across its portfolio. The EDF Climate Corps fellows found that the project would lead to more consistent, comfortable temperatures for residents, <strong>save $56 million in NYCHA\u2019s annual costs<\/strong> and avoid 177,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions each year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AT&amp;T, QTS and NYCHA have all helped get the word out about how they\u2019re maximizing energy opportunities. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.att.com\/gen\/press-room?pid=21788&amp;cdvn=news&amp;newsarticleid=33122\">AT&amp;T recently shared insight<\/a>s on potential savings at 250 facilities; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qualitytech.com\/documents\/31123\/54545\/qts-press-20110616.pdf\">QTS announced a plan<\/a> to invest $10 million in energy efficiency projects at the world\u2019s second largest data center; <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/innovation\/2012\/01\/03\/2011\/12\/07\/new-york-city-housing-authority-works-with-environmental-defense-fund-finds-56-million-in-cost-savings-with-new-technology\/\">and New York City Housing Authority announced its mission<\/a> to spur public housing authorities and private landlords around the nation to make smart energy investments.<\/p>\n<p>You can help share these lessons too.
