{"id":18584,"date":"2018-12-10T16:20:59","date_gmt":"2018-12-10T21:20:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/?p=18584"},"modified":"2018-12-12T14:26:26","modified_gmt":"2018-12-12T19:26:26","slug":"epa-hearing-illustrates-broad-support-for-methane-rule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2018\/12\/10\/epa-hearing-illustrates-broad-support-for-methane-rule\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA hearing illustrates broad support for methane rule"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/people\/rosalie-winn\">Rosalie Winn<\/a> and Matthew McGee<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2018\/12\/EPA-HQ.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18585 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2018\/12\/EPA-HQ-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2018\/12\/EPA-HQ-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2018\/12\/EPA-HQ-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2018\/12\/EPA-HQ.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Last month, EPA held its one and only public hearing on a proposed rollback of federal methane protections.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump Administration\u2019s attempt to gut rules that cut methane pollution from new and modified oil and gas facilities\u2014the first step of a two-pronged effort to eliminate federal regulation of methane altogether\u2014was met by near-universal condemnation from the scores of individuals who testified at EPA\u2019s Denver headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition to the rollback came from many corners: parents concerned for their children\u2019s health, tribal members worried about the toll on their native lands, and investors and scientists alarmed at the threat to our economy and climate.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Protecting our health and future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wide support for EPA methane rules\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iUeGXMAmqFU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Many who testified at EPA\u2019s hearing were worried about the threat of oil and gas pollution, and its impact on their families\u2019 health.<\/p>\n<p>The current methane rule includes sensible, cost-effective steps that curb dangerous emissions. But EPA\u2019s proposal dramatically weakens these safeguards and puts families like the Worthingtons at risk.<\/p>\n<p>Jane Worthington was clear on the need for stronger, rather than weaker EPA action. \u201cWe don\u2019t feel like there is enough protection,\u201d she said, \u201cfor EPA to rollback what we do have. Well, we feel like the EPA isn\u2019t taking care of our family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Members of tribal communities also spoke out, pointing to the outsized impact of oil and gas production on their native lands and the threat posed to future generations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"simplePullQuote right\"><p>You have until December 17 to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/Vqx\">add your name<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>to those speaking out against EPA\u2019s methane rollbacks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Shaina Oliver of the Navajo Nation testified that it\u2019s EPA\u2019s duty to \u201cprotect my inherent rights as an indigenous woman on this land. I have an obligation to voice these rights so that my children will continue to retain them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Oliver, a member of Mom\u2019s Clean Air Force, also emphasized that \u201cit\u2019s the responsibility of every man and woman who create a child to protect that child\u2019s right to clean air, land, and water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students also weighed in on the threat EPA\u2019s rollbacks would pose to future generations\u2019 health and environment. &#8220;I reject this proposal in the name of those whom I love and in the name of this single world that we inhabit,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DefendOurFuture\/status\/1063130212077051905\">said Megan Thompson<\/a> of Defend Our Future, \u201cI reject this proposal because it directly threatens the future of those who come after us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Energy experts and business leaders agree<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the world demands cleaner energy options, EPA\u2019s rollback undermines natural gas\u2019 competitiveness and its role in a low-carbon economy.<\/p>\n<p>Ned Harvey of the Rocky Mountain Institute observed that, \u201cwe must anticipate a market-based premium will emerge for low-emission gas, as such, it\u2019s in our national interest to ensure U.S. gas sets the bar globally for low-emissions gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investor group, As You Sow, seconded that sentiment and added that \u201cthe proposed rollback jeopardizes natural gas\u2019 reputation as a clean fuel and calls into question the role it can play in a low-carbon future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The truth, as Lila Holzman of As You Sow put it, is that \u201cmethane emissions also pose a major risk to investors in the oil and gas industry.\u201d Industry-wide standards like EPA\u2019s methane rule are needed to mitigate that critical risk.<\/p>\n<p>Curbing methane pollution is also a major economic opportunity, which EPA\u2019s rollbacks ignore.<\/p>\n<p>With over 130 companies and 570 facilities in the U.S., the methane mitigation industry not only helps cut pollution, but according to Jacob Schlesinger of the Center for Methane Emissions Solutions, \u201chas created thousands of high-skill, high-pay, and geographically-diverse jobs that cannot be offshored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add your voice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You have until December 17 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/Vqx\">add your name<\/a> to those speaking out against EPA\u2019s methane rollbacks.<\/p>\n<p>As the Trump Administration moves toward the wholesale elimination of federal methane regulation, it\u2019s critical that we send a clear message that the American people\u2014from western Pennsylvania to the Navajo Nation to New York boardrooms\u2014do not want more pollution and waste.<\/p>\n<span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblogs.edf.org%2Fenergyexchange%2F2018%2F12%2F10%2Fepa-hearing-illustrates-broad-support-for-methane-rule%2F&#038;text=EPA%20hearing%20illustrates%20broad%20support%20for%20methane%20rule&#038;via=EDFEnergyEx&#038;related=EDFEnergyEx' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EPA hearing illustrates broad support for methane rule <\/a><\/span><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblogs.edf.org%2Fenergyexchange%2F2018%2F12%2F10%2Fepa-hearing-illustrates-broad-support-for-methane-rule%2F&#038;text=EPA%20hearing%20illustrates%20broad%20support%20for%20methane%20rule&#038;via=EDFEnergyEx&#038;related=EDFEnergyEx' target='_blank' class='bctt-ctt-btn'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Share on X<\/a><\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Rosalie Winn and Matthew McGee Last month, EPA held its one and only public hearing on a proposed rollback of federal methane protections.
