{"id":1662,"date":"2011-09-15T19:18:45","date_gmt":"2011-09-15T19:18:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/?p=1662"},"modified":"2015-12-21T12:46:26","modified_gmt":"2015-12-21T18:46:26","slug":"san-diego-outage-triggers-a-green-grid-revolution-in-author","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2011\/09\/15\/san-diego-outage-triggers-a-green-grid-revolution-in-author\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego Outage Triggers A Green Grid Revolution (in author)!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2011\/09\/Lauren-Navarro-Photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1665\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2011\/09\/Lauren-Navarro-Photo-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2011\/09\/Lauren-Navarro-Photo-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2011\/09\/Lauren-Navarro-Photo-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2011\/09\/Lauren-Navarro-Photo.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>I landed at San Diego International Airport at 4pm on Thursday.\u00a0 Since I sat towards the front of the plane, I was one of the first people to walk up the corridor.\u00a0 Suddenly, the lights went out.\u00a0 \u201cPerfect timing,\u201d the woman in front of me said.<\/p>\n<p>As I walked through the airport, the lights were off, the lines had grown long.\u00a0 Cell phones weren\u2019t working, and I was reminded of a zombie movie I had seen.\u00a0 Waiting in the late afternoon heat, I tried to remember the exact words in my colleague\u2019s quickly written agreement to pick me up and drive me to the event.<\/p>\n<p>I hoped that it was just the airport, but as we inched our way through the traffic, it was clear that San Diego had ground to a halt.\u00a0 Gas stations became crowded with people who literally ran out of gas and couldn\u2019t get home.\u00a0 As the sunlight waned, we rushed to buy provisions (water, protein bars, etc.) at an Albertsons \u2013 possible only because it had installed fuel cells or solar panels.\u00a0 From the freeway we could see that University of California San Diego, which has its own microgrid, was also lit up thanks to\u00a0distributed generation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We learned that a transmission problem in Arizona had caused a possible sequence of events that included the protective functions at the nuclear power plant turning the plant off and lead to extensive power outages throughout San Diego, southern California, and parts of Mexico.\u00a0 The funny part?\u00a0 I was with a colleague from San Diego Gas and Electric, traveling to speak about our collaborative smart grid planning effort.\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t help but think about how the smart grid could have helped here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Storage and advanced grid sensing and control technologies could have isolated the problem at its source and kept it from growing.\u00a0 The smart grid\u2019s ability to incorporate larger amounts of renewable energy could have kept electricity flowing.\u00a0 Microgrids \u2013 with their own local generation and smart technologies &#8211; could have switched to an off-grid mode and remained powered through the outage.\u00a0 Buildings with demand response capabilities and appropriately designed roof top solar or other forms of distributed generation, could have reduced their consumption and used smart technologies to share their power with businesses running critical equipment or with people who need air conditioning or medical equipment to maintain their health.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1667\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1667\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2011\/09\/8af1c_ap_san_diego_power_outage_ll_110908_wg1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1667\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2011\/09\/8af1c_ap_san_diego_power_outage_ll_110908_wg1-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2011\/09\/8af1c_ap_san_diego_power_outage_ll_110908_wg1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2011\/09\/8af1c_ap_san_diego_power_outage_ll_110908_wg1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1667\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: AP Photo\/Gregory Bull<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Smart grids can play an even bigger role after an outage is over: Electricity production is a huge source of air and water pollution\u2013 emissions from U.S. electricity production make up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewclimate.org\/technology\/overview\/electricity\">30%\u00a0of domestic climate change pollution<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/pdf.wri.org\/navigating_numbers.pdf\">over 6% of <em>global<\/em> emissions<\/a>.\u00a0 A thoughtfully-designed smart grid could reduce harmful emissions by up to 30% and fight against the tragedy of more than 34,000 deaths a year from power plant pollution &#8211; more lives than are lost on U.S. highways.<\/p>\n<p>A greener grid will also put us at the forefront of the world\u2019s competitive clean energy economy.\u00a0 A recently released Duke University report commissioned by EDF identified smart grid companies already flourishing in 37 states at 315 locations\u2014including headquarters, manufacturing plants and hardware\/software development facilities.<\/p>\n<p>All of this adds up: the green grid revolution will create as many as 180,000 domestic jobs per year while saving lives.\u00a0 Now that\u2019s worth standing up for.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I landed at San Diego International Airport at 4pm on Thursday.\u00a0 Since I sat towards the front of the plane, I was one of the first people to walk up the corridor.\u00a0 Suddenly, the lights went out.\u00a0 \u201cPerfect timing,\u201d the woman in front of me said.
