{"id":1589,"date":"2011-08-26T15:01:01","date_gmt":"2011-08-26T15:01:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/?p=1589"},"modified":"2026-03-10T18:09:50","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T22:09:50","slug":"fulfilling-the-spelman-legacy-a-choice-to-change-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2011\/08\/26\/fulfilling-the-spelman-legacy-a-choice-to-change-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Fulfilling The Spelman Legacy:  A Choice To Change The World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2011\/08\/Melissa-Wise.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1590\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2011\/08\/Melissa-Wise-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>By: Melissa Wise, 2011 Climate Corps Public Sector Fellow at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spelman.edu\/\">Spelman College<\/a>; MBA candidate at Keller Graduate School of Management<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here I am back on Spelman\u2019s campus.\u00a0 It\u2019s been eight years since the first time I walked through their gates as a student.\u00a0 I never thought that I\u2019d be back here so soon after graduation, living a dream that I once had out of desperation as a \u201cfreshwoman\u201d trying to survive the non-air-conditioned dorms.\u00a0 I had a vision of one day returning to the Spelman community as an Alumna and providing at least one dorm with the air-conditioning that it deserved.\u00a0 It seemed to be a \u201crite of passage\u201d at Spelman for first-year students to live in non-air-conditioned buildings. Those unbearable long summer seasons in \u201cHot-lanta\u201d will never be forgotten.\u00a0 So, I vowed that when I became a well-established businesswoman, it would be my gift to the school.\u00a0 Being a fellow with EDF may make that dream come true a little sooner than planned.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I\u2019ve learned upon my return:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Suites, Spelman\u2019s newest dormitory, received a silver-level certification from LEED.\u00a0 This makes it the first of its kind for a residence hall on the campus of a historically Black university.<\/li>\n<li>My office equipment inventory has shown that Spelman uses a very high percentage of Energy Star products including: copiers, fax machines, computers, and monitors. Spelman also has a high percentage of Energy Star vending and snack machines.<\/li>\n<li>Lighting upgrades are well under way from T12 to T8 bulbs, along with many other energy efficient bulb choices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And the list just goes on at this pioneering institute.\u00a0 Often, I find myself coming across an idea for a possible improvement, just to find out that it has already been considered or underway in future plans.\u00a0 Spelman seems to have it all under control, so I\u2019ll just have to keep on digging!\u00a0 It is definitely hard to find fault behind these gates.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting quotes I frequently hear:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s my choice, and I choose to change the world!\u201d A line from Spelman\u2019s theme song sung by our Glee Club.\u00a0 I hear this song or see this phrase often around campus and in articles on the school website.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAhh, touch\u00e9!\u201d Friendly debates involving opposing views of equipment and upgrades.\u00a0 For example, the campus mechanical \u201cMr. Fix \u2013it\u201d may feel that a heating\/cooling unit needs to be replaced due to its extensive life cycle, while the Automatic Control System guru will say that it\u2019s working just fine. Who is right?<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHey, who turned out the lights?\u201d The Director of Facilities Management and Services (my supervisor) will randomly make trips to areas around campus during peak demand hours and turn off lights in unoccupied areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Choosing to change the world may seem like a difficult task for such a small school, but Spelman is no stranger to leadership and service. Be it students, alumnae, faculty or staff, Spelman is dedicated to serving its community and making choices that will impact many generations to come. \u00a0I am proud to join the continuous, precious legacy of Spelman\u2019s story that dates back to 1881. Needless to say, this opportunity is a dream come true.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/page.cfm?tagID=60252\">EDF Climate Corps Public Sector<\/a> (CCPS) trains graduate students to identify energy efficiency savings in colleges, universities, local governments and houses of worship. The program focuses on partnerships with minority serving institutions and diverse communities.
