Gross Domestic Product in the U.S. has grown 246 percent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gispub.epa.gov\/air\/trendsreport\/2016\/\">over the life of the Clean Air Act<\/a>\u00a0while at the same time pollutants have been reduced 71 percent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Clean Air Act has led to enormous innovation in technology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Clean Air Act has helped launch innovation in technologies that reduce pollution \u2013technologies which in many cases can be exported around the world.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We know from previous experience with standards we adopted to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from power plants in 1971 and 1979 that pollution standards can reduce emissions substantially, and that the more the technology is deployed to meet the standards the more costs go down. The Clean Air Act helped create a market demand for various pollution control technologies by creating standards for pollutants, including for sulfur dioxide.\u00a0(Read more from technology experts who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/2017.02.06_tech_experts_final_brief.pdf\">filed a legal brief<\/a>\u00a0in support of carbon standards for power plants.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15821\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2017\/06\/Capture.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"705\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2017\/06\/Capture.jpg 705w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2017\/06\/Capture-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 705px) 100vw, 705px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>America\u2019s homegrown environmental protection industry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selectusa.gov\/environmental-technology-industry-united-states\">single largest producer<\/a>\u00a0of environmental technologies in the world, capturing 29 percent of the world\u2019s $1.05 trillion market.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, there were an<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ebionline.org\/updates\/4023-us-environmental-industry-generates-363-billion-in-revenues\">estimated 1.73 million jobs<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in the U.S. environmental industry, with projected growth of 3 to 4 percent over the next several years.<\/p>\n<p>According to the U.S. government,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selectusa.gov\/environmental-technology-industry-united-states\">99 percent<\/a>\u00a0of the businesses in this industry were small to medium-sized. U.S. environmental companies\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/2016.export.gov\/industry\/environment\/eg_main_086862.asp\">exported<\/a>\u00a0about $48 billion in goods in 2013. At the same time, 2005 data from U.S. manufacturers indicate that their expenses for reducing pollution account for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/clean-air-act-overview\/clean-air-act-and-economy#technology\">less than one percent<\/a>\u00a0of the value of the goods they ship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Environmental protection standards can drive jobs in a myriad of sectors including manufacturing, engineering, construction, operations, and more.<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2017\/06\/Global-Market-for-Environmental-Technologies-chart.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15803 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2017\/06\/Global-Market-for-Environmental-Technologies-chart-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2017\/06\/Global-Market-for-Environmental-Technologies-chart-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2017\/06\/Global-Market-for-Environmental-Technologies-chart.png 347w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some examples of jobs and industries created by specific EPA clean air protections include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/clean-air-act-overview\/clean-air-act-and-economy#_edn15\">200,000 person-years of jobs<\/a>\u00a0from implementation of the Clean Air Interstate Rule to reduce soot and smog pollution.<\/li>\n<li>The vehicle emissions control industry provides about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.meca.org\/attachments\/2930\/MECA_American_jobs_press_release_033017.pdf\">70,000 jobs<\/a>\u00a0in North America.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mjbradley.com\/sites\/default\/files\/MJBA_CPP_IPM_Summary.pdf\">Analysis by MJ Bradley &amp; Associates<\/a> shows that the Clean Power Plan could reduce electricity bills by up to 20 percent in 2030.\u00a0At the same time, analysis by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/employment-analysis-epa-clean-power-plan\/\">Economic Policy Institute<\/a>\u00a0found that the Clean Power Plan will create a net 360,000 jobs in 2020.<\/li>\n<li>Compliance with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/ib325-epa-toxics-rule-job-creation\/\">Mercury and Air Toxics Standards<\/a>\u00a0was expected to create a net 84,500 jobs in the utility sector and as a result of pollution abatement and control investments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Cleaning the air saves lives and creates an engine for job growth&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clean air saves lives and improves productivity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cleaner air saves lives and protects the health of American families.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/clean-air-act-overview\/clean-air-act-and-economy\">landmark analysis<\/a>, in 2010\u00a0<em>alone<\/em>\u00a0the Clean Air Act\u00a0prevented 160,000 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>It also prevented 13 million lost workdays and 3.2 million lost school days because of illnesses and diseases caused or exacerbated by air pollution.
