The technology is here and customers are ready, but we need a modernized grid to unlock the clean energy future. Fortunately, utilities like AEP Ohio are taking advantage of the potential to lower pollution and customers\u2019 energy bills by updating \u2013 and upgrading \u2013 their operations.<\/p>\n<p>For the past several years, AEP Ohio has been thoughtfully implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/climate\/smart-grid-brings-us-power-21st-century\">grid modernization<\/a>, and the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) today <a href=\"http:\/\/www.puco.ohio.gov\/puco\/index.cfm\/media-room\/media-releases\/puco-approves-aep-ohios-gridsmart-phase-2\/#sthash.TA86Ib9z.aiufCxFH.dpbs\">approved<\/a> a <a href=\"http:\/\/dis.puc.state.oh.us\/TiffToPDf\/A1001001A16D07B55859H02932.pdf\">settlement<\/a> in the utility\u2019s program. In a win-win for the environment and customers, AEP Ohio\u2019s grid modernization plan will result in less energy waste, as well as significant customer benefits that greatly exceed the program costs: Every dollar spent will <a href=\"http:\/\/dis.puc.state.oh.us\/TiffToPDf\/A1001001A16D20B65934G00098.pdf\">produce<\/a> nearly three times as much in savings.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cRight-sizing\u201d voltage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the new settlement, Environmental Defense Fund helped obtain commitments for several environmental benefits, including significant <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2015\/04\/20\/its-not-magic-its-voltage-optimization\/\">voltage optimization<\/a> improvements. Previously, since AEP Ohio couldn\u2019t determine the voltage of electricity at various points along the grid, it was overpowering homes and businesses with more voltage than was needed, resulting in higher electricity bills. Grid modernization will allow the utility to use sensors to measure voltage and supply electricity at lower, right-sized voltage, resulting in less electricity use and lower customer bills, as well as less greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>AEP tested voltage optimization and <a href=\"http:\/\/dis.puc.state.oh.us\/TiffToPDf\/A1001001A16D20B65934G00098.pdf\">found<\/a> it results in energy savings of 3 percent system-wide, representing significant pollution reduction considering it has 1.5 million customers in the Buckeye State. AEP Ohio will now install voltage optimization on 160 power lines and annually report on the energy savings, peak demand reductions, monetary savings, and greenhouse gas reductions.<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Ohio\u2019s Electric Grid is Getting Smarter, Thanks to AEP&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>AEP Ohio will also study the feasibility of using voltage optimization throughout its territory, to determine how much more deployment would be cost-effective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional grid modernization rewards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new grid modernization plan will also result in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Efficient operations:\u00a0<\/strong>AEP Ohio will <a href=\"http:\/\/dis.puc.state.oh.us\/TiffToPDf\/A1001001A16D20B65934G00098.pdf\">install<\/a> 894,000 smart meters, enabling remote meter-reading and eliminating the need to manually read each meter every month. This will reduce the miles driven by AEP Ohio personnel by 440,380 annually, avoiding 186,556 metric tons of CO2 annually \u2013 equivalent to taking nearly 40,000 cars off the road.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"simplePullQuote right\"><p>Real-time access to energy data allows people to track their use through cellphone apps or in-home energy monitors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Data access:<\/strong>\u00a0AEP Ohio will work with regulators and stakeholders to provide timely access to energy-use data for customers, energy suppliers, and third parties. Real-time access to energy data allows people to track their use through cellphone apps or in-home energy monitors,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2015\/06\/16\/empowering-pennsylvanians-through-increased-energy-data-access\/\">empowering customers<\/a>\u00a0to make smart choices that lower their bills. That\u2019s because data opens the door for customers to take full advantage of new, time-based rate plans, where the cost of electricity is higher during peak-use periods (when demand is highest) and lower during off-peak periods. AEP\u2019s real-time data will also enable other energy suppliers to access that information, with permission, and offer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2015\/01\/27\/all-electricity-is-not-priced-equally-time-variant-pricing-101\/\">time-variant pricing<\/a>\u00a0(lower prices when more electricity is available) to their customers. Studies\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.missiondata.org\/news\/2016\/2\/2\/got-data-report-shows-benefits-of-consumer-access-to-their-energy-data\">show<\/a>\u00a0that granting people access to their data, combined with time-variant pricing and data-enabled third-party programs, can save up to 18 percent on electricity bills, without negatively affecting convenience or comfort. Finally, AEP Ohio will develop a collaborative process with stakeholders to discuss data access issues, including implementation of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenbuttonalliance.org\/\"><em>Green Button Connect<\/em><\/a>, an emerging national standard to provide customers with better access to data.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Environmental metrics:<\/strong>\u00a0AEP Ohio will hire a third party to quantify\u00a0the greenhouse gas emission reductions achieved through grid modernization. Defining and measuring performance is key to creating a new system that rewards utilities for delivering clean energy services, such as on-site renewable energy and home energy management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As more utilities modernize their grids, customers can benefit from lower energy bills and cleaner energy. In this case, with savings vastly eclipsing the up-front costs, AEP Ohio has put forth a forward-looking, cost-effective plan.
