This is a huge, $330 million dollar problem according to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2015\/06\/23\/big-oil-and-gas-emissions-out-west-new-report-sizes-methane-problem-on-federal-and-tribal-lands\/?_ga=1.65865262.122620674.1415990458\">study<\/a> from ICF international. While an <a href=\"http:\/\/westernvaluesproject.org\/report-taxpayers-are-losing-millions-each-year-as-venting-and-flaring-of-natural-gas-increases-on-public-lands\/\">analysis<\/a> from the Western Values Project estimates taxpayers could lose out on almost $800 million over the next decade &#8211; unless the BLM acts to reduce wasteful venting and flaring practices.<\/p>\n<p>Reeling in waste of resources that belong to the nation\u2019s tribes and taxpayers is an effort that folks from across the \u00a0\u00a0political spectrum can get behind.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Methane is the essential ingredient of natural gas and a potent climate forcer when emitted to the atmosphere.\u00a0 Wasteful drilling practices on public and tribal lands \u2013 largely located in the rural Western U.S. \u2013 exacts both financial and environmental costs.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the surge in affordable technologies has made it possible for oil and gas companies to capture methane and reduce waste cost effectively.\u00a0 It\u2019s a key reason why <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2016\/11\/cutting-natgas-waste-federal-tribal-lands-supporter-list-ver2015-11-15.pdf\">elected officials from across the West<\/a> and thousands of community members support the BLM\u2019s efforts to crack down on waste.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Moreover, according to a recent poll, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradocollege.edu\/dotAsset\/10b5e54f-bd80-4b72-9390-cde2161bcefd.pdf\">80% of Westerners<\/a> (Democrats, Republicans and independents) \u00a0support these efforts \u2013 numbers that were reflected at public hearings where supporters of BLM\u2019s efforts outnumbered adversaries by a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2016\/02\/25\/you-cant-argue-with-math-blms-methane-rules-enjoy-strong-and-diverse-support\/\">3-to-1 margin<\/a>. And a recent U.S. House vote saw a number of Republicans cross the aisle to support this rule.<\/p>\n<p>With the transition to a new President and a new administration, many have asked about the fate of some of the energy policies that have been enacted in the last few years. It is too early to draw firm conclusions about what the incoming Trump Administration or the next Congress will decide on specific policies or regulations. But we do know that the BLM proposal is sound policy that will reduce waste of an important domestic energy resource.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump transition team has said it wants to create jobs and harness America\u2019s energy reserves.
