This year is set to be another record-breaker<\/a> for solar power: the industry is on pace to nearly double in size by the end of 2016, and there are now more than one million solar installations in the U.S. that generated more new electricity in the first quarter of the year than coal, natural gas, and nuclear combined. This is good news, in part because 2016 is also on track to be the hottest year in recorded history<\/a> \u2013 awash in scorching hot solar rays we can tap for clean, renewable energy.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, solar power is still inaccessible to vast, unreached markets and segments of the U.S. population. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory<\/a> says only 22 to 27 percent of residential rooftops are capable of hosting a solar system because of structural challenges, tree shading, or \u201cownership issues\u201d \u2013 mainly households who rent, and cannot install solar panels on roofs they don\u2019t own. Likewise, U.S. households who earn less than $40,000 per year (40 percent of the U.S. population) account for\u00a0less than five percent<\/a> of all solar installations.<\/p>\n

But the solar game is changing. New models are emerging to complement and fill gaps in the market.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Community solar, defined<\/a> as \u201ca solar-electric system that provides power and\/or financial benefit to, or is owned by, multiple community members,\u201d presents a unique opportunity to bring solar access to the masses. Even better, community solar in the U.S. is predicted to more than double<\/a> between 2015 and 2016.<\/p>\n

Here are 10 (unranked) reasons why we love community solar:<\/p>\n

  1. Access<\/strong> \u2013 Costs and homeownership can act as barriers to solar access, but community solar eliminates the need for the upfront purchase or financing of a rooftop system. Utilities or a third party (like a non-profit or co-op) cover the cost of building a larger, shared-system in a region, which local residents can subscribe to. Further, many programs allow customers to transfer their benefits if they move to a new apartment or home within the program\u2019s jurisdiction.<\/li>\n
  2. Customer Savings<\/strong> \u2013 Community solar can save customers money and help protect against rising energy prices as most programs allow you to \u201clock-in\u201d a rate (ideally, a discounted rate for low-income customers). Enrolling in a community solar program, paired with energy efficiency upgrades, can help some customers keep a stable and affordable energy bill.<\/li>\n
  3. Partnerships<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cCommunity\u201d solar needs community buy-in, which requires meaningful engagement and partnerships. A successful program should reflect shared goals, values, and priorities. The best programs will include partnerships with local non-profits and community leaders, like we\u2019re seeing in Los Angeles<\/a>, Colorado<\/a>, and North Carolina<\/a>, for example.<\/li>\n
  4. Climate Leadership<\/strong> – A strong community solar program can work in tandem with rooftop solar, utility-scale clean energy, electric vehicles, and battery storage to reduce harmful carbon pollution from our electric grid. In 2014, solar power helped avoid an estimated 20 million metric tons<\/a> of harmful carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of taking four million cars off the road.<\/li>\n
  5. Environmental Justice <\/strong>\u2013 Community solar can help avoid, and eventually retire, dirty power plants, which spew harmful toxins and air pollution. This is critical because a disproportionate number<\/a> of low-income people and people of color live within 30 miles of a coal-fired power plant, and nearly 40 percent of communities of color breathe unhealthy, polluted air.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. Jobs \u2013 <\/strong>The solar industry has grown jobs at an impressive rate<\/a>: Adding workers nearly 20 times faster than the overall economy, solar employment has grown by 86 percent in the past five years<\/strong>. A strong community solar program can continue this trend and include a pipeline to well-paying, local jobs.<\/li>\n
    2. Location\u2013 <\/strong>Community solar systems can be built in centralized location<\/a>s, which cuts costs while also remaining relatively small in size and close to users. The location of a community solar system in or near a community improves visibility of clean energy solutions, and paired with equity goals can lead to increased investment in communities most impacted by pollution and poor infrastructure.<\/li>\n
    3. Conservation<\/strong> \u2013 Cities and already-developed areas are perfect for community solar, which can provide local clean energy while also preserving farmland, greenspace, ecosystems, and other natural land. For example, California\u2019s cities and urban centers could generate enough solar to meet the state’s power needs three to five times over<\/a>, without developing a single additional acre of the state’s natural areas.<\/li>\n
    4. Utility Savings <\/strong>\u2013 Community solar can ease revenue losses<\/a> associated with residential solar, and allow utilities to meet state or local mandates for distributed generation at a 40 percent cheaper<\/a>per-kilowatt installation cost than single home-sized systems. What\u2019s more, utilities can build systems on utility- or municipally-owned land, greatly reducing project-development costs.<\/li>\n
    5. Resiliency <\/strong>\u2013 A neighborhood-scale, clean-energy network can support microgrids<\/a> that can disconnect from the main grid during blackouts to ensure the lights stay on. As extreme weather events become more common due to climate change, community solar paired with microgrids can help protect people from power disruptions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      We\u2019ve come a long way in harnessing the sun for clean, renewable energy; and we still have plenty of opportunity to innovate new programs and business models \u2013 like community solar \u2013 that will allow all communities to access its power.<\/p>\n
