{"id":12869,"date":"2012-10-12T17:44:29","date_gmt":"2012-10-12T22:44:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/?p=12869"},"modified":"2016-04-01T17:49:26","modified_gmt":"2016-04-01T22:49:26","slug":"latino-support-surges-for-the-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2012\/10\/12\/latino-support-surges-for-the-environment\/","title":{"rendered":"Latino Support Surges for the Environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2016\/04\/iStock_000010124908Medium.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12870\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12870\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2016\/04\/iStock_000010124908Medium-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Wind turbine - renewable energy source\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2016\/04\/iStock_000010124908Medium-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2016\/04\/iStock_000010124908Medium-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2016\/04\/iStock_000010124908Medium-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/38\/files\/2016\/04\/iStock_000010124908Medium.jpg 1698w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>California lawmakers take notice: Latino voters want a strong economy AND a clean environment, two things they believe are not mutually exclusive.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clcvedfund.org\/pdf\/latinos-memo-clcvef-10-04-12.pdf\">new p<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clcvedfund.org\/pdf\/latinos-memo-clcvef-10-04-12.pdf\">oll<\/a> released by the California League of Conservation Voters finds that an overwhelming <strong>90 percent<\/strong> of Latino voters believe that\u00a0the state can \u201cprotect the environment and create jobs at the same time.\u201d\u00a0 This number mirrors national trends among Latino voters, including a recent national <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/ecocentro\/survey\/Full%20PowerPoint%20Presentation%20(English).pdf\">poll<\/a> by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and the Sierra Club, which found that 90 percent of surveyed voters believe that protecting land and water resources is \u201ccritical to the economy.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here are three major takeaways:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0Latinos are the fastest growing electoral body in the country, and in California they account for 38 percent of the state\u2019s population and 25 percent of the electorate in 2010. There are over\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/latinodecisions.wordpress.com\/2011\/03\/31\/where-latino-votes-will-matter-in-2012\/\">2 million<\/a>\u00a0eligible but unregistered Latino voters in the state and almost\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/xlibrary\/assets\/statistics\/publications\/ois_lpr_pe_2010.pdf\">2.4 million<\/a>\u00a0legal permanent residents who are eligible to become citizens and vote.\u00a0 With the most recent redistricting process in California,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2012\/01\/12\/1054037\/-California-Congressional-Districts-Analysis-Updated-\">19 out of 53 congressional districts<\/a>\u00a0now have a Latino majority, the largest number of such districts in the country.\u00a0 In the state legislature, nearly 40 percent of both the <a href=\"http:\/\/spreadsheets.latimes.com\/stateAssembly-2011-0729\/\">Assembly<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/spreadsheets.latimes.com\/stateSenate-2011-0729\/\">State Senate<\/a> are Latino-majority districts.<\/li>\n<li>Latinos can see the direct impact of pollution in their daily lives: 85 percent of those polled have \u201cserious concerns\u201d about toxic pollution affecting the health and wellbeing of their families.\u00a0 Their concerns are well-founded &#8211; California is home to the top 5 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stateoftheair.org\/2012\/city-rankings\/most-polluted-cities.html\">most polluted<\/a> cities in the country according to the American Lung Association, and Latinos make up <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2012\/07\/18\/540921\/how-the-epa-can-save-lives-in-californias-central-valley\/\">more than half of all residents<\/a> in these polluted cities, with populations in the Central Valley reaching a whopping 60 percent.<\/li>\n<li>Latinos want clean energy, and they are willing to pay extra for it.\u00a0 Latino voters show overwhelming support (83 percent) for the state\u2019s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), one of the main components of the state\u2019s landmark legislation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/climate\/AB32\">AB 32<\/a>, which requires one third of the state\u2019s electricity to come from renewable energy sources by 2020 \u2013 compare this to 51 percent of Latino voters in the state who oppose drilling off the coast, or a meager 44 percent who favor coal as an energy source.\u00a0 Most surprisingly, support for the RPS remains strong even when voters are told their energy rates may increase.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>On this last point, I\u2019ve written before that <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/californiadream\/2012\/09\/14\/the-clean-economy-is-an-opportunity-for-us-latinos\/\">the clean economy is an economic opportunity for U.S. Latinos<\/a>, and the NCLR\/Sierra poll confirms that Latinos would rather work in the clean energy sector, with 83 percent calling coal plants and\u00a0oil refineries \u201ca thing of the past.\u201d\u00a0 National polls also indicate that Latino voters largely reject the notion that clean energy and environmental protections are \u201cjob-killers\u201d or bad for the economy.<\/p>\n<p>While jobs and the economy are still the number one issue on Latino voter\u2019s minds, it is clear that they believe economic growth at the expense of public health or environmental protection is a no-go for California.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California lawmakers take notice: Latino voters want a strong economy AND a clean environment, two things they believe are not mutually exclusive.
