minds, according to the 2012 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latinodecisions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external ext-linked\">Latino Decisions Poll<\/a>,\u201d a theme that will be featured prominently in this week\u2019s Hispanic Heritage events in DC.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all the more reason to discuss a powerful engine of opportunity in this country called the clean \u201cgreen\u201d economy &#8211; it is here, it is real, and it is one of the few bright spots in an economy desperate for a comeback.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, I wrote \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.latinovations.com\/2010\/09\/24\/guest-blogger-series-jorge-madrid-green-can-grow-latino-business-ownership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external ext-linked\">Green Can Grow Latino Business<\/a>,\u201d arguing that the clean economy will create new demand for goods and services, new supply chains and niche markets, and opportunities to create new business models and reinvent old ones.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This is a boon for all would-be entrepreneurs, including Latinos &#8212; the nation\u2019s fastest growing demographic.\u00a0Further, new business creates jobs, and jobs create more demand for goods and services, and the virtuous cycle continues.<\/p>\n<p>The results?\u00a0 Despite the persistence of a national recession, the clean energy sector grew at double the rate of national economy from 2003-2010, attracting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2012\/03\/13\/443507\/clean-energy-investments-record-highs-in-2011-us-clean-tech-vc-funding-jumps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external ext-linked\">record-level investment<\/a>\u00a0and venture capital last year, and boasting twice the export value of traditional sectors. \u00a0In total, \u201cGreen Goods and Services\u201d as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor accounts for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2012\/03\/23\/450776\/bureau-of-labor-statistics-reports-31-million-us-green-jobs-top-5-takeaways\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external ext-linked\">3.1 million U.S. jobs<\/a>, with more than one-third of those jobs in the struggling construction and manufacturing industries.<\/p>\n<p>In my home state of California, where Latinos make up 38 percent of the state\u2019s population, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/sites\/default\/files\/invest-to-grow_03_screen.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external ext-linked\">numbers<\/a>\u00a0are even more striking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>California leads the country in clean economy jobs and solar power generation, and wind power has doubled since\u00a02002.<\/li>\n<li>The state accounts for 13 percent of all \u201cenvironmental goods\u201d exported by the U.S., the majority in renewable or efficiency products.<\/li>\n<li>From 2002 to 2011 the state produced 9 percent of worldwide clean energy patents,<\/li>\n<li>Since 2006, $9 billion in venture capital has flowed to California clean technology firms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/green\/report\/2011\/09\/21\/10344\/growing-green-jobs-in-americas-urban-centers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external ext-linked\">Jobs<\/a>\u00a0in the clean economy are diverse, across a wide range of education-level and skills.\u00a0 On average, clean economy jobs offer a higher median wage and career advancement opportunities, and almost half of all jobs in the clean economy don\u2019t require a college degree, according to the Brookings Institution.<\/p>\n<p>An\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cabrightspot.org\/images\/stories\/GreenJobsintheLosAngelesRegionReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external ext-linked\">analysis<\/a>\u00a0of clean energy jobs in Southern California by\u00a0Philip Romero, the former Dean of CSU Los Angeles College of Business and Economics, finds that \u201cworkers command wages with a 50-to-100 percent premium over the average job,\u201d and estimates that the overall clean economy will grow \u201cby at least 60-to-100 percent\u201d\u00a0 by the late 2030\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>If we want to compare this to fossil fuels, we find that the overall clean economy employs \u201cmore than ten times as many workers in the LA region as does petroleum and coal products production,\u201d according to Romero &#8212; and analysis of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wspa.org\/uploads\/documents\/Economic%20Data%20Sheets\/Purvin%20Gertz%20California%20Economic%20Impacts.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external ext-linked\">oil industry\u2019s own job estimates<\/a>\u00a0finds that more than half of all the state\u2019s \u201cdirect jobs\u201d are gasoline station attendants making minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p>If we want to have a serious discussion about economic opportunity &#8211; for all communities &#8211; we need look no further than the clean \u201cgreen\u201d economy.<\/p>\n<p>It is an economic engine that is creating new demand, new investments, well-paid jobs, and new business opportunities, all in spite of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.<\/p>\n<p>And, by the way, it is creating economic growth without harming the planet and poisoning communities with toxic pollution.\u00a0 If we want America to continue being the land of opportunity, then let green grow!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Jorge Madrid is a Fellow with the Environmental Defense Fund.
