{"id":12603,"date":"2013-08-28T11:51:17","date_gmt":"2013-08-28T16:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/?p=12603"},"modified":"2016-03-22T11:52:54","modified_gmt":"2016-03-22T16:52:54","slug":"agricultural-offsets-are-to-2013-as-energy-efficiency-was-to-1973","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/energyexchange\/2013\/08\/28\/agricultural-offsets-are-to-2013-as-energy-efficiency-was-to-1973\/","title":{"rendered":"Agricultural Offsets are to 2013 as Energy Efficiency was to 1973"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/californiadream\/files\/2013\/02\/robert1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2125\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/californiadream\/files\/2013\/02\/robert1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a>In 1973 Chase Manhattan Bank saw <a href=\"http:\/\/softpathinnovations.com\/SoftPath\/About_Us_files\/Energy%20Strategy-%20The%20Road%20Not%20Taken.pdf\">\u201cvirtually no scope for conservation\u201d<\/a> of electricity.\u00a0 In 2011 the total market for energy efficiency in buildings was worth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navigantresearch.com\/newsroom\/global-market-for-energy-efficient-buildings-to-surpass-100-billion-by-2017\">$68 billion<\/a> and is expected to grow more than 50% by 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The same thing is being said about greenhouse gas (GHG) protocols for agriculture today as energy efficiency 40 years ago.\u00a0 When the California Air Resources Board (CARB) stated that they plan to consider a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arb.ca.gov\/cc\/capandtrade\/protocols\/riceprotocol.htm\">protocol for rice farmers<\/a> in California and the Midsouth, some stated that the reductions from the protocol would be \u201cvery small\u201d and not \u201cwidely used.\u201d\u00a0 These criticisms miss a key point.<\/p>\n<p>The rice protocol is the jumping off point for a wide-range of agricultural offsets.\u00a0 The rice protocol will demonstrate the benefits from the use of biogeochemical models, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dndc.sr.unh.edu\/\">DeNitrification DeComposition (DNDC)<\/a> model, pioneered by the University of New Hampshire over the past two decades.\u00a0 It will show how agricultural producers can aggregate their reductions with fellow farmers to create an offset project.\u00a0 It will revolutionize ways to verify large amounts of data through risk-based sampling.\u00a0 In short, this is the start of something significant.<\/p>\n<p>Once the rice protocol is approved, CARB can turn its attention to other crops such as corn, wheat, or leafy greens.\u00a0 They can look at grazing practices on land across the United States.\u00a0 These practices, just like energy efficiency, add up fast.\u00a0 It is entirely possible to achieve annual GHG reductions of one hundred million metric tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub>e reductions, equivalent to taking more than 20 million cars off the road, over the next ten years.<\/p>\n<p>Because agriculture is the largest uncapped sector under California\u2019s cap-and-trade program, it has a unique potential to help California meet its 2020 target.\u00a0 To play a role in the program, the rice protocol needs to be adopted this spring and additional offset protocols from agriculture need to be considered in the upcoming years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1973 Chase Manhattan Bank saw \u201cvirtually no scope for conservation\u201d of electricity.\u00a0 In 2011 the total market for energy efficiency in buildings was worth $68 billion and is expected to grow more than 50% by 2017.
