Credit: Eric\u00a0Kurth, NOAA Photo Library<\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>NOAA\u2019s services are woven into daily life.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agency\u2019s&nbsp;National Weather Service&nbsp;provides&nbsp;daily forecasts and severe storm warnings&nbsp;that help families, businesses,&nbsp;and emergency responders prepare for storms, floods, heatwaves, and more.&nbsp;Its predictions protect lives and reduce&nbsp;damages&nbsp;to homes, infrastructure,&nbsp;and local economies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For coastal communities, NOAA provides critical information&nbsp;to&nbsp;respond to sea level rise, flooding, and changing ocean conditions.&nbsp;Through&nbsp;coastal management programs, ocean observation, and&nbsp;habitat restoration,&nbsp;NOAA helps communities make informed decisions that&nbsp;can mean the&nbsp;difference between resilient homes, roads, or&nbsp;power grids&nbsp;and leaving them vulnerable to destruction.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the millions of people who make a living on the water,\u00a0NOAA\u00a0is a critical part of daily life. Credit: Erik Zobrist, NOAA Photo Library.<\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The agency is in jeopardy<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In April, the Trump Administration released&nbsp;its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/budget_fy2027.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request&nbsp;to Congress<\/a>, a&nbsp;preliminary&nbsp;blueprint that is&nbsp;often used as&nbsp;a&nbsp;starting point for Congressional negotiations.&nbsp;The&nbsp;proposal calls for&nbsp;a&nbsp;<strong>devastating&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>26 percent reduction&nbsp;to NOAA\u2019s budget&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;the&nbsp;elimination&nbsp;of 35 programs&nbsp;and institutes\u2014more than&nbsp;$1 billion&nbsp;in cuts. These cuts include:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Eliminating\u00a0NOAA\u2019s\u00a0Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research\u00a0(OAR).<\/strong>\u00a0OAR is\u00a0the agency&#8217;s primary research arm,\u00a0responsible\u00a0for improving our understanding of severe weather, climate change, fisheries ecosystems,\u00a0air quality, and more.\u00a0Without\u00a0OAR, climate research will struggle to keep pace\u00a0with escalating\u00a0effects of climate change, and\u00a0we\u2019ll\u00a0all pay the price.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Eliminating\u00a0programs that support coastal communities<\/strong>, including Coastal Zone Management grants, Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) observations, and National Estuarine Research Reserves. These programs\u00a0monitor\u00a0and\u00a0protect\u00a0our coasts, and without them, communities will be left with fewer tools to prepare\u00a0and respond\u00a0to\u00a0rising seas and stronger storms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cutting\u00a0NOAA Fisheries by\u00a037%<\/strong>.\u00a0NOAA scientists assess fish populations and set sustainable catch limits so\u00a0commercial fishers can plan\u00a0for their small\u00a0businesses,\u00a0recreational fishers can enjoy the sport, and we can all eat seafood. Last year, the administration&nbsp;proposed&nbsp;similarly steep&nbsp;reductions&nbsp;to NOAA\u2019s budget, which Congress&nbsp;ultimately rejected.&nbsp;As they draft this year\u2019s budget bills,&nbsp;Congress faces the same choice:&nbsp;enact&nbsp;cuts that weaken one of the nation&#8217;s most valuable&nbsp;scientific agencies or&nbsp;set commonsense&nbsp;funding levels that allow NOAA to operate&nbsp;as it was intended, investing in a&nbsp;more&nbsp;fruitful and&nbsp;resilient&nbsp;future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provides critical services to everyday Americans,\u00a0but\u00a0the Trump Administration has proposed a\u00a026 percent\u00a0cut to its\u00a0budget.
